First Aid for your Attacker

If you ever shoot someone in self defense, you won't be thinking about giving them first aid. You will probably be shaking like a leaf (I was) and all you will be thinking about is getting help (911). If I'm wrong, then try to remove the bullet, bandage him up, give him a clean shirt and call his lawyer for him. Just joking.

I guess you are right. I never shot one in SD and I don't look forward to it. But I would w/o hesitation if I have to.

Just worried about my carpet and stuff ;)

ditto on that. Down here in Florida you could not shoot him again without getting charged. The threat would be over when he hit the ground and it would be up to you to prove you had to shoot him again. Best to make that first shot count.

I think Mr. williams in the recent Ocala incident disproved this. Assailants were clearly down inside the store and at the door on the way out and yet he kept shooting and no charges ever filed against him.
In his case, their being down did not eliminate the threat as they were still in possession of weapons (one a gun and the other a bat). Clearly the threat not being eliminated is what determines your destiny.

As to question on thread, no way. My aid will be 911, after he can no longer be a threat, and from a very far distance.

Is Mr. WIlliams the senior who was at an internet cafe when the robbery was attempted?

To my point earlier, you have been attacked and someone has tried to take your life. Until the threat has stopped moving it would seem to me that your only concern is to neutralize the threat.
Provide aid?
That is what 911 is for.

I just swatted a fly and he landed belly up. Looked awful dead for a good ten minutes. Then when I went to move the paper he was on, he rolled over and started walking.

Same with humans. A good shock and a guy could fall down. Maybe pass out. Then re-awake and take in his surroundings and 'come back to life'.

It happens in hospitals. People are brought in comatose and then reanimate on the table. I don't think I would take the chance that the guy who was trying to hurt me minutes before is not going to try again when I get close to him.

Ask the pharmacist in Oklahoma City what happens when you shoot a downed attacker! Now that l've opened this can of worms, what if the attacker is a bear?

 Hog

Clearly varies by state.
In that OK case, sounds like the pharmacist was out and then came back in, and gave the robber five more bullets.
Don't know the whole case but clearly different than my response to Florida specifically.

Here is Florida one where no charges resulted.

I would not render aid, for the sole reason they could renew their attack upon me. Call 911, holster the gun, and keep your distance until police and EMT arrive.

Call 911 and let the responders deal with medical issues.

In an incident in a Chicago suburb, a man shot an attacker, then administered first aid. As a result, he had a hard time convincing the police that the shooting was in self defense. His humanitarian response gave the impression that he was not in fear of his life. As hardcore as it sounds, you can't give the impression the shooting was anything other than necessary and intentional. Your words and actions will be held against you.

administration of first aid puts you back in the ring for round two of the fight. Call for an ambulance along with police.

well thats Chicago for ya.
Some jurisdictions are out to nail you any way they can and will twist the details in favor of nailing you.
Get a feel for your area policy and act accordingly.

Wow, just saw the video.

In keeping with the thread's theme/subject, seems this pharmacist's idea of first aid was to calmly go back in the store, get a second gun and pop five more shots into someone laying on the ground, previously shot in the head.

Wow.

Need to look at the laws in your state. Are you required to? Do you have a Good Samaritan law? Also, what is your state of mind? As one poster said, are you current and what is your level of expertise?
What is the damage? Is it something you've been trained to handle?

That is what makes these "wanna be" posts so amusing. Anyone who's been in combat knows==what you have planned and what you actually do are two different things!

Call 911, don't go near or even talk to your attacker.Do not talk to bystanders. Mkae mental notes of what is around you that may help you. (Evidence and witnesses.) Point them out to authorities when they arrive. Tell 911 you have been attacked and need and ambulance and immediate assistance. When the authorities arrive tell them you are too traumatized at this time to speak, that you do not feel well and need to go to the hosspital right away. When you are ALONE call your attorney and follow his instructions. You will to traumatized to talk and anything you say will probably not be accurate. Remember what you say 'can & WILL be used against you. Don't dig your own grave. Be polite and hush up!

Operating on the theory that all of my cartridges in my handgun are all the same diameter I guess by shooting very accurately I could try to staunch the flow of blood by pumping another round into the initial bullet hole.

(anyone that has attempted to harm myself or a loved one will only get the courtesy of a call to 911. It is not in my best interest to give them an opportunity to continue their hostilities on the scene by rendering first aid.)
