In an incident in a Chicago suburb, a man shot an attacker, then administered first aid. As a result, he had a hard time convincing the police that the shooting was in self defense. His humanitarian response gave the impression that he was not in fear of his life. As hardcore as it sounds, you can't give the impression the shooting was anything other than necessary and intentional. Your words and actions will be held against you.

Some jurisdictions are out to nail you any way they can and will twist the details in favor of nailing you.
Get a feel for your area policy and act accordingly.

Ask the pharmacist in Oklahoma City what happens when you shoot a downed attacker! Now that l've opened this can of worms, what if the attacker is a bear?

In keeping with the thread's theme/subject, seems this pharmacist's idea of first aid was to calmly go back in the store, get a second gun and pop five more shots into someone laying on the ground, previously shot in the head.

Need to look at the laws in your state. Are you required to? Do you have a Good Samaritan law? Also, what is your state of mind? As one poster said, are you current and what is your level of expertise?
What is the damage? Is it something you've been trained to handle?

That is what makes these "wanna be" posts so amusing. Anyone who's been in combat knows==what you have planned and what you actually do are two different things!

Call 911, don't go near or even talk to your attacker.Do not talk to bystanders. Mkae mental notes of what is around you that may help you. (Evidence and witnesses.) Point them out to authorities when they arrive. Tell 911 you have been attacked and need and ambulance and immediate assistance. When the authorities arrive tell them you are too traumatized at this time to speak, that you do not feel well and need to go to the hosspital right away. When you are ALONE call your attorney and follow his instructions. You will to traumatized to talk and anything you say will probably not be accurate. Remember what you say 'can & WILL be used against you. Don't dig your own grave. Be polite and hush up!

Operating on the theory that all of my cartridges in my handgun are all the same diameter I guess by shooting very accurately I could try to staunch the flow of blood by pumping another round into the initial bullet hole.



(anyone that has attempted to harm myself or a loved one will only get the courtesy of a call to 911. It is not in my best interest to give them an opportunity to continue their hostilities on the scene by rendering first aid.)

My CCW course instructor, an undercover LEO for a local agency, passed along some fascinating information to us, in answer to a student's question, about what to expect if you have had to shoot someone. Especially civilians, but even some LEOs, have been known as soon as the shooting was over to want to put the gun on the ground or hand it to whoever is standing closest, and get as far away from it as possible -- a completely instinctive response, apparently, to the trauma of having shot someone with it. Wow.

Physical reactions of heart rate/blood pressure off the scale; watering eyes (not tears) due to flattening of the pupils attendant to stress; tunnel vision; shakes; inability to remember or focus on what has happened for as many as two to three days; etc etc.

I'm sure those with LEO and military training can add to or comment on this list. All said, being able to render first aid even if you wanted to (for whatever reasons, good or bad) likely would be moot due to the reactions your own mind and body will have to the shooting. Good advice, Derek, about calling your attorney as soon as possible and, in the meantime, not making any statements to LE.

so I was driving home from my required CCW course after this very thing was discussed. We had a young lovely lady in that class that truely was one of the prettiest girls I'd seen inside and out.
She was expressing how bad she'd feel if ever she had to shoot someone, even holding up a box of hello kitty band-aids to show her willingness to help... really, she just made everyone utter a genuine heart felt "Awww" .. Thing is, it puts you back in harms way, also, its not a courtesy your attacker would extend to you if you lost.

Let me add, do whatever you have to do to make sure the perps weapon stays on scene.

If I'm ever attacked and forced to defend myself, the last concern I'll have is assisting the attacker with first aid.

I read way back if you killed someone you had to take care of their family, marry the widow. Might want to check out that widow first! I heard of a guy that went to the hospital to beg the forgiveness of a guy he shot. He asked the guy was there anything he could do for him. The guy said well, you can start by takeing your foot off the oxygen hose!

Quick story:

About 30 years ago, a buddy of mine was involved in a shooting. "Routine" traffic stop, BG gets out of his car with his weapon drawn and orders my friend into the ditch. My buddy draws his 28 and point shot 6 times, hitting the guy twice (4 rounds into the car he was driving). The guy drops and as my friend is approaching him another trooper pulls up. My friend asks the troop "Think we should start CPR?". They did and blood starts coming out rather rapidly. Pretty much pumped the guy dry. Needless to say, the BG didn't make it.

My lesson from this? Heck, yeah, do CPR!

Louisiana, as do many other states, has a "Good Samaritan"
law that immunizes one from lawsuits if you to render aid, including first aid to a person in need -- this would apply
even if you had just shot the person needing aid.

I agree with the prior posts that calling 911/EMT's is the legally prudent thing to do.

Rendering aid also puts the shooter in a much better position
"in the court of public opinion" as well as with a grand jury hearing evidence of the shooting to determine if it was justified. It will demonstrate common sense and a sense of compassion even though you were forced to defend yourself.

How true -- the best combat plan can usually be thrown out the window 5 minutes after initial contact is made.

No first aid, no trying to restrain, no ropes or handcuffs. Distance is your friend. do not take your eyes off the attacker after checking to make sure they acted alone. call 911 tell them you need the police and an ambulance. Do not holster the gun until police arrive then do it fast, do not let the officers see you with a gun in your hand. let them see your empty hands. tell the officer what they did that justified you in shooting him, tell the officer you will press charges if they survive, point out witnesses and evidence then tell them " officer this is very serious and I want an attorney before I say anymore".
