First day with Shield 40

Look like what? There is no pic.

I have 3 pics on my iphone but havnt looked / figured out how to post pictures.

Also, using the latest iphone update of tapatalk and not liking it!!!!

Rastoff, no picture showing.

Last round did not feed?? Did it jam (stovepipe) between the breech face and the chamber? Did the round fail to strip from the magazine? Did the round get stuck halfway into the chamber? There are a number of different types of FTFs'.

Wow, not on my game today. Here's the pic:

That doesn't really match this description:
Basicly the round never left the mag and the slide stayed locked back

Nevertheless, let us know if it looked like that at all.

That's not in the process of stripping off the last round. The slide locked back prematurely. This could have several causes.

Can you post a pic of your grip?

Not sure if i can get a pic of grip easily. I wont say my grip is the same everytime. But i try to keep my fingers low away from slide. All of the ftf have been with the 6 round mag. And also i dont believe i have had any with my fs 40.

When it happens again i will look at it better and try to take better pics. I do believe the round started to move up the ramp.

Good photos and they show a lot of information. The cartridge was not stripped from the mag, and the slide locked back. I would guess that since all was feeding fine, until the last cartridge, and the slide locked back, that it is one of three things. You accidentally pushed the slide lock up, with you thumb. This has been reported by other members, that the recoil snap caused their thumb to push up on the lock. You don't have the issue with your FS, but the Shield's grip is so much smaller that your thumb is likely riding higher up. The only way for the slide to lock back is by manually pushing the lever up, or after the last round is feed, the follower would push the lever up to lock the slide back. But since there is still a cartridge in the mag, the follower can not raise up high enough, to push the lever up. Why this would only happen with the 6 round mag, and on the last round, is the question.

Option two is you have a deformed follower or magazine, that is pushing the lever up, even before the last cartridge is fed. I doubt that, but anything is possible. That should be an easy check. I would first lock the slide open and check the clearance between the slide lock tab, with the edge of the mag and the follower as you insert that 6 round mag. If it is real close, that may be the cause. If the clearance is close, add some upward pressure to the bottom of the mag, to see if it gets closer. You may be pushing the mag up, with the pinky finger, while shooting. I do that.

The last thing the photos show is the last cartridge is well forward, in the magazine. If the left edge of the cartridge can touch the slide lock tab, it may be pushing the slide lock up. Make sure when loading the mag, all cartridges are getting seated to the rear of the mag. There really should not be much room for forward movement of the cartridge, when inserted in the mag. Compare the followers between the two mags, for differences. Another option is to swap the followers, this would show if one is a problem. The followers should be identical.

If not one of these items, I would be at a total loss as to what would be causing the problem.

Just tested the cartridge sticking out too far forward, and it does push the slide lock up. That may be your issue. I question how the cartridge would get out that far. I manually pulled the cartridge out about 1/8 inch and pushed the mag up into the mag well. It partially moved the slide lock up, with the slide in battery. However I couldn't rack the slide back and get the slide to lock back, as the cartridge gets pushed back into the mag. I would still check the other suggestions, especially the follower swap.

What Bob stated in his next to last paragraph is what I suspect has been my issue. It's only locked back with Speer Gold Dots. Even when I slap the mag in the palm of my hand to try to make all rounds rest against the rear of the mag, it still occurred. I wonder if the rounds are shifting forward under recoil... (for me, both mags did it - always after 3-4 shots)

I will try to check these things this week. I am not a gun internal expert. It just seems strange that is always on the 6 rd mag and the last one which happens to be the 3rd with our range rules.

You pistol should not do that!

Send it back to S&W !

Don't fiddle with it.

Your pistol is worse than useless: it's dangerous for its intended purpose!

You can't count on this thing to work.

Could it be that with the 6 round mag being shorter that you grip the gun just a little higher and are under recoil accidentaly activating the slide lock. And with the 7 round mag being longer your grip is just a little lower that you don't activate the slide lock.

So 3 more times today, 1 of them on the 7 rd mag.

Now i am will to except i am to blame but it is always on the last rd! I dropped the mag on the last one and took a pic.

I also had one time that as i pulled the trigger, the slide move that last tiny bit forward. Here is the pic of the light strike. Then i reloaded the round and fired it

Yeah, I've tried to duplicate your problem, but I can't. I think it's time to send it back to S&W. Or just give them a call and ask about the mag. Maybe they'll send you another.

Well i fired any 100 today. Using left hand, no issues. Then a few "normal" no issues. I even tried to push the slide lock on a couple. No issue.

So i guess for now i call it good and see what happens. Maybe it was me. Maybe not.
