Correct, no permit or training required. I do plan on investing in a class soon.

General laws / EDC class.

Also a bit of one-on-one instruction time won't hurt, either. Self defense situational awareness is dramatically different than plinking at the controlled range.

Defensive pistol classes are good, too.

Thank you everyone for the great info provided. I am looking for a class in my area right now. I have also contacted a friend who is a local police officer about the laws regarding firearms and when they can and can't be used for self defense. I do not have kids but I plan on investing in a safe just because you can never be too safe.
