Mine was a Winchester model 190, .22 semi-auto rifle, bought used, circa 1978. That gun was never cleaned, but, strangely, it never jammed.

(This is not the exact gun, but a copy of it):

(As for my second gun? I'm not sure, because it's been years. Possibly a single-shot 20-gauge H&R shotgun, circa 1980, or, a black Titan .25 acp pistol, circa 1980, or, possibly, a S&W model 60 .38 snubbie, same year. I really don't recall which came second, because too much time has passed...).

Holster-worn 4" Model 19, bought around 1976 or so. Never shot a 38 special thru it!

My first gun was a Mossberg bolt action .22. My first handgun was a Ruger Security Six that was a .357 but the barrel was roll-stamped .38 Special. But it had a .357 cylinder.

A 1967 Winchester 94 (.30-.30). I was three months old. From what I gather my mom was upset, good ol' Uncle Chuck decided to start me out right. Three years later my brother got a 1970 W94, he was also 3 months old, mom was still upset.

20 years later I was the keeper of both 94's. I had spent the previous few years fascinated with guns and by the time I was 23 I was fairly well versed in them, but my education in them was growing at an even faster rate by then. My brother on the other hand did not follow the same route, he was dis-interested. I informed him I was going to attend a gun show and asked him if he wanted to go with me. He stated he did, but only so he could sell his 94. I thought it was a dumb thing to do, but oh well. I grabbed his 94 and off to the show we went. In 1990 he struck a $125 deal for his 94. He was happy, but halfway home I started to think how stupid I was for not buying it from him to keep it in the family (once again, please remember we were 23 and 20 respectively and quite dumb at that age).

A five years later my gun interest had REALLY taken off and I often thought back on how my brothers 94 got away the way it did. For the first time I decided to do a serial number check on my 94, because I now knew the allure and distinction of what a pre-'64 was and I was hoping my 94 may have been a new, old stock that had been sitting around for three or so years in 1967.

So, I did a serial number check on "my" 94...

...it came up as a 1970!

It makes me sick to this day knowing I pulled MY 94 out that day way back in 1990 to be sold by my brother!!!

S&W model 640 was my first gun purchase. Not the first gun I ever shot, but the first handgun I bought with my own money. I had always wanted a shiny new revolver and thought the small size was perfect. Had no idea at the time that it takes work to control a J-frame. I ended up selling it shortly for my first K-frame.

Hand me downs, air rifles or first one I bought myself?
Had several Daisy's and air rifles in my very young years , hand me downs Springfield single shot .22 and a model 74 Winchester, first bought by myself Stevens single shot 12 ga age 16 at the princely sum of 39.99.

In 1974 Mrs. swsig wanted a High Standard .22 to replace the one her ex had kept. Our LGS had one in stock, but the owner wanted to test-fire it before he sold it to us. Good thing, because it wouldn't cycle. He suggested a Ruger Standard, which worked perfectly, so we bought it. Now, 45 years later, it still works perfectly -- a tough, high quality, inexpensive gun with the best trigger I've ever pulled.
