First Gun: What Was Yours?

Ha! I guess my first was an M-14, too, but they didn't let me take it home.

But that doesn't count my dad's F. W. Heym single shot, bolt action .22, which I did acquire as my first, personally owned firearm when the folks were fixing to move away and I slipped it out of the house and took it to my home. My first purchased firearm was Remington Model 788 in .308 Winchester. I still have those guns after 50 years....... :)

A Winchester 94, a christmas present from Mom and Dad when I was 8. My first handgun was a Single Six when I was 15. I gifted the Winchester to a friend's son as his first gun, and my beautiful wife stole the Single Six from me! She's a heckuva good shot too.....

A Beretta 92FS. Picked it up used from a pawn shop, no box, case, or even a paper sack. Had to carry it in broad daylight to my car along crowded streets for a few blocks.

An RG-38. Boy, was I dumb. I don't know if RG is still around. They shouldn't be. I think their revolvers were cast from pig iron or slag. Lesson learned. My next gun was a Ruger Standard Model .22.

I had an RG .22 revolver that someone gave me for free. I played with it for awhile, and then gave it to someone else, for free. It was a tiny gun, and looked almost like a toy. It looked like this one:

I saw a lot of people shot & killed by these cheap RG revolvers. During one call we found a big guy dead in his front yard w/no apparent injury. Xrays revealed the round entered his armpit and traveled into his heart killing him. There was a tiny amount of blood absorbed by the armpit hair that we did not see at the scene b/c it was dark outside.

Mid 50s 870 Wingmaster, my grandfather gave it to me for my 10th birthday almost 30 years ago. Along with his Randall model 5 from the same era.

Still have both.

1965 just after graduating from Coast Guard boot camp I bought a Colt Frontier Scout 22LR. I too wish I still had it, but I got transferred to NYC, so I sold it. My second was a Savage model 24 Over/under 410/22. Kept that one for many many years even in NY. Long guns were legal.

1965 My dad bought me a 20 gauge Ted Williams shotgun from Sears on a Friday evening for $100, sale add in Sundays paper for $85, Monday evening we took it back, they gave him a $15 store credit, still have it today.

My folks gave me a new Winchester model 62A pump for my 12th birthday in 1955. What a sweet little shooter it is and of course I still have it locked away for my grandson. A year later we moved to Fort Lauderdale where they had a junior rifle club, so I mowed lawns to fund the purchase of a used Winchester Model 69A bolt action which still shoots nice groups. Too bad there are not more clubs for young people to learn gun safety and shooting skills.

Interesting, my first firearm was also a Winchester Model 190. It, however, was a jammomatic. It was not until recently that I found out about the loose barrel nut that causes many of the jamming problems with it. I promptly sold it and bought a clip fed Stevens bolt action .22

My first handgun was a stainless Colt Officers ACP.

First gun: lever action BB gun
Second: Spyder anodized cammo paintball gun
First real firearms were inherited: a Walther .32, an FEG .380, and a .25 of dubious manufacturing
First purchased: a Pardner Pump 12g, used at Cableas
First new: Springfield XD .45 tactical
