First Gun: What Was Yours?

I was not considering airguns.:o

In this case. It was a German made Diana 23 .177 air rifle. Got it for Christmas in 1970.

It rid the neihgborhood of a vast number of rats.:D

It is now a pile of rust.:o But it's still with me.:D

My first gun was a kind of scruffy Mossberg .22 semi auto that had a 7 shot magazine and a plastic for-end that tipped down. I was 11 or 12 and a friend gave the gun to my father who intern gave it to me. I do not remember much more about the gun as it was a looooooooooong time ago and since then many guns went through my hands!:D

First Gun

This thread has been around before, and was interesting each time. I've told my story before, but, I'll tell it again. I was given a double bbl. black powder pistol by my dad, to play with, at around age three. He knew that I learned to love guns, at an early age. He found that old relic, in the attic of a old house he was wiring. I played with that old relic for a while, until it was stolen by a neighborhood boy, and I never saw it again.

I suppose the Crossman Pump-up BB/Pellet gun, when they first came out; the stock & forestock were real wood. Had to be maybe '66/'67, when I was 9 or 10? It was still at my parents' working 'til the check valve or piston, whatever, gave out & dad threw it out. I was deadly accurate with that gun up at our camp. Crawford Co., beautiful woods! First real gun, 16 gauge, single-shot, full choke, I believe it was Stevens. Got it at 11 years old for Christmas. Sold it in the '80s when the steel mills shut down. Dang it! I can't remember one picture of me & that gun. Maybe there was one taken at Christmas that year, but it's probably long lost.

Crawford Co. is very nice. I go to Meadville every year. Was stationed in Pittsburgh for a while.

A Crossman BB gun, with a forearm that you "pumped up" to get the pressure in it.
Second was a Crossman BB pistol that took CO2 cartridges. It looked like a Luger.

First rifle was a Remington 12A 22 pump inherited from my grandfather when I was 8. First handguns were a Browning 1922 , 32ACP with Nazi proofs, spare mag, and military holster and a Sauer and Son 1913 32ACP with military holster WW2 bring backs by my dad. First gun I ever bought was a Ruger Security Six with 6 " barrel. Still have the first three but the Ruger is long gone. I never had a BB gun started right off with the 22.

1966, Remington 582, 22 caliber, bolt action rifle. Christmas Day with a K-Mart 4 power scope. Still have it.

1st purchased- Ruger KP90DC

1st ever- Savage 20ga youth model known as the Santa Killer. Got it for Christmas from Santa when I was 8 years old and had a hunch it was really from Dad, not Santa. Hence, the gun that killed Santa.

Stevens 410 shotgun for my fourth birthday. Dad cut the stock down for me and I shot it for years. It is still in my gun safe 58 years later.

My first gun purchase was at age 17 as a young GI going to school at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland in 1959. 6" Colt Python ser. #6303. Sold it to a German friend in 1964 while I was serving in Germany and now get to shoot it every time I go back to visit him. He still has it. At the time, I could just buy another one for $125.oo!

Mine was a Western Field 12 gauge pump shotgun, manufactured by Nobel for Montgomery Ward. I bought it used (very used) a couple days after I legally could, following my 18th birthday, some 53 years ago. It was the only gun I could afford at the time, and for quite a few years thereafter. I shot everything with it, from ducks to deer, along with some trap and skeet, and even got a double on partridge (ruffed grouse) once, something that I've never been able to repeat with any of my current crop of somewhat more expensive double guns. It still occupies a special place in the back of my safe and always will, even though I wouldn't dare fire it today (the locking lugs have peened back to the point where the headspace has increased to a truly frightening degree).

We had .22 rifles and a .410 shotgun that really did not belong to anyone in particular - I did not consider them to be mine but could use them whenever I wanted. Don't know what ever became of them. The first guns I purchased myself was early 1976. First one was a 4" 28-2 and a couple of months later a 2 1/2" blue 19-3. Sine the 28 was not "cool" back then I eventually traded it for a 4" model 19. No longer have that particular 4" 19, but still have the 2 1/2".

Very first gun was an H&R single-barrel 20 gauge. Kicked like a mule and you could throw a cat through the holes in the pattern. Dad soon saw how poor of a gun it was and Christmas 1969 I unwrapped a Browning Sweet Sixteen. My brother still has it. First handgun was a 3-screw Ruger Blackhawk convertible in .45 Colt/.45 ACP. I was 18 and my mom had to sign for it.

My first gun was a Ithaca M49 .22 LR single shot. It had a lever that tilted the breech block, like a Martini action. Looked like a lever action Winchester. I received it on my 15th birthday. I was also given my granddaddy's Stevens .22/.410 O/U that same day.

That year, 1969, was a great gun year. That fall, I went to my first North-South Skirmish Association National shoot. My dad bought me a .58 caliber muzzle loading rifle, a Zoli Zouave. I asked my grandmother for a 28 gauge muzzle loading shotgun and she gave me the money for it-$24.95! I ordered it from Dixie Gun Works and it was delivered by mail on Christmas Eve.

I still have every one of those guns, except for the Zouave. I sold it to a friend in 1991 and sent the money to my dad, who put it towards a 1853 Enfield rifle musket replica. He paid for the rest. I later sold that Enfield and put the money towards a Parker-Hale 1853. So, in a roundabout way, I still have my first muzzle loader. :)
