Back during fathers day weekend a local gun store ran an instore special on 3.1" Optics ready 13+1 Shield plus HGs for $370 cash price or $395 OTD. I went in and looking to buy one but he was all out. I figured typically my luck. Guy tending the counter offered me a rain check if I agreed to buy one as soon as he called me to let me know when he got more in. I readily agreed. Well got the call Tuesday and I went and picked one up.
My initial thoughts are the new 2.0 Shield Plus lives up to all the hype and S&W fixed literally all the issues I (and most other G1 Shield owner) had with my 2012 Gen-1 Shield I have carried religiously for closing in on 13 years now.
The less than stellar trigger on my Gen-1 that needed an Apex upgrade to maximize it's shootability has been replaced by an outstanding (IMO) flat faced trigger that is slightly better than my Apex upgraded trigger on my G1 Shield and in MY opinion the trigger on my G2 Shield Plus is not by a great amount but, definately BETTER then the trigger on my 4" Performance Center Shield Plus. Due to I suspect having the incorrect striker block in it.
The grip has a much better much more "grippy texture" to it VS my G1 and for me at least I will not need to apply a Talon grip upgrade to maximize my control of the gun as I did on my G1 Shield.
The S&W factory NT sights on my new G2 are much better than the factory non/NTS my G1 Shield Plus I ended up replacing with XS F8 sights.
As far as my calipers tell me the new G2 Shield is only 19/250 of an inch wider at the grip otherwise both guns are identical in all other dimensional measurements.
Difference in weight of my G1 Shield W/9 rounds of 124grn HST VS the Gen2 W/14 124grn HST is 0.6oz per both my digital kitchen food scales. Which I find shocking as how can one gun carry 5 more 124/9mm which weigh 2.2oz and only be 0.06oz hevior. Then I weighed the guns empty with mag in and the G1 Shield weighed 1.6oz more than the G2 Shield per both my scales.
Over all I can find no faults with my new G1 3" Shield Plus and I will be able to get out and shoot it Monday and plan on doing a side by side comparison of all three of my Shields. My two G2's I will shoot first with only iron sights then with an RMR installed. Distances will be 7, 10 and 15 yards. Ammo will be my handloads featuring RMR 124grn FMJ over 4.2grns HP-38 chroned at 1030fps/mv. Going to try to burn through 400 rounds just in the new 3.1" G2 Shield plus so if it shoots as good as my G1 Shield it will become my new EDC on Monday.
