Need some advice: Have a S&W Highway patrolman 3 screw, pinned barrel.
Hammer will not cock by trigger or thumb - unless the cylinder release is pulled the rear, (forward pressure releases the cylinder, backward to release the trigger)
What is broken, out of adjustment, worn?

Did the problem happen after the side plate was recently installed? If so, I think the hammer block got moved a bit when installing the side plate.

sorry, history of gun is unknown as it was purchased from an estate.
one of the 3 screw heads does show tampering but that could have happened years ago.

Sounds like the center pin is not pushing the cylinder release back. Check to see if the center pin is free, or out of alignment. Also, the front part of the cylinder release may be missing. I have seen examples where the front portion is separate, or has separated.

1911A1: If you are not a S&W armorer, IMHO you should get this revolver to a competent S&W gunsmith. There are many things that might be wrong and/or tampered with prior to your ownership that the whole inner works need to be removed, examined and replaced and refitted as required. ..........
