First Revolver 500 Magnum

my first revolver was a 454 super red hawk.
i don't know how that compares to the 500 but i never had any problems. shot the heck out of it

If you like loud hard hitting big flash guns buy that one. My wife saw an 83/4" at our lgs. Got it for my birthday as a joke. I have a Desert Eagle 50ae and this was way bigger to her. I love this gun. If you start with 500 special ammo you will love it to. I am 5'7" 157 lbs not a big guy but I have some 700 gr. reloads and love shooting them.

I'm a big guy 5"11 240 pounds so I think that's going to help shoot this beast :D It's time to buy some ammo wish me luck

Don't buy into all the negativity about this beast of a gun. I have the 6.5 with built in ports and I love this hand cannon! I use a glove on my right hand and put a tight grip on her and it's no problem at all. I'm only 5'10" 180. Being a fellow CA guy I know your pain about all our insane laws. Enjoy your hand cannon! Here's a pic of mine.

Yup, CA sucks if you see a gun that you want you better get it now.

The 500 was also my first revolver, and never fired a magnum prior.
Great choice.

(tip: learn to reload, and with cost of .500 ammo, the gear will pay for itself in no time. Now costing .37 each or .22 each loaded round if I cast my own 440gr).

Since you have not had a revolver before, you have no reference to go by, and no bad training to unlearn.

Diving into the deep end? What deep end, you have only seen deep so to you, deep is now normal.

Aren't all first girlfriends Las Vegas show girls?

The people that seem to have the most issues with the S&W 500 are those who have never shot one, or those who have shot plenty of other magnum revolvers prior to the getting a 500. You are in the best shape as a new 500 owner. For you, it will all seem normal. Load it up all the way and have a blast. Congrats!

Use a firm grip and keep fingers away from the barrel / cylinder gap unless you want them toasted or flame cut.

Treat is like any other revolver but be aware of the power you are releasing each shot and enjoy.

I like it. Go big or go home! When you master that cannon you will probably have the ability to be the best .357 shooter ever.

Welcome to the Forum

I do not see any gouges in your photograph

However, traditionally gouges are not normal

That is a fun revolver to shoot.

Just realize that the short barrel has problems stabilizing any of the really heavy projectiles.

These are 450, 510, 550, 640, 650 and 725 grains

If you stay at 550 grains and below you will be just fine

I see your groves in a later post. They are not normal. Contact S&W and they will take care of it. In addition if you reload you'll save a bunch. My reduced reloads are running 20 cents a load with reused brass.
335 grn Rainier PHP
13 grn TightGroup
Length 2.11"
~ Velocity 1000 fps
Naturally verify the load data!
Great gun, aim and it hits the target.

Don't listen to some of these people. I've 2 of these 500's and absolutely love shooting them. You DO need to reload though, 2-3 bucks a pop for commercial ammo is crazy. Also, as someone else stated, you can load some lighter rounds. Both my daughters even shoot mine.

ENJOY!!

Your first revolver? Did another "Dirty Harry" movie come out? Most of the guys who bought .44 mags around then, shot two rounds, wet their pants (or worse). The guns never saw the light of day again until they were sold. I bought several that way, and lots of unused ammo.
Good luck and be careful. You are in way over your head.

I've owned and shot the 500 since they first hit the market. The best advice here is to use some common sense. You can watch YouTube videos that feature a woman shooting it one-handed, lots of kid's touching off a few rounds and even a pro like Jerry Miculek emptying a cylinder in the blink off an eye. None of that has anything to do with transitioning a revolver newbie to an unfamiliar platform. There is a learning curve here and it's just plain silly to consider choosing the extreme end of possible revolver choices (with an even steeper learning curve) upon which to try and develop some level of shooting skill beyond that of dangerously incompetent. Don't kid yourself. While the 500 can be mastered, you need to respect how serious the challenge really is.

Even with the lightest loads, it remains a big, heavy and decidedly ungainly gun. Just about anyone can shoot a 500 a time or two, but trying to learn how to shoot a revolver well by starting with one of the more difficult choices to master is setting yourself up to fail. With zero heavy recoiling revolver shooting experience to draw from, you will likely do nothing but ingrain a bunch of bad habits that will take no small amount of effort to rid yourself of. Learn on something more reasonable like a 38spec/357mag and transition to the 44spec/44mag before getting behind the wheel of a 500. At that point you will be in a much better place to work through the learning curve of the 500. Just because can manage to hang on to a 500 and avoid smacking yourself in the head with it, doesn't mean you can shortcut the learning process. If you have a serious interest in being a component (or better) 500 shooter, then don't skip the development steps required to reach that end.

You didn't say if it was new or used....

If it's used, the 'gouges' count for nothing. You can barely see them. If you bought it new, it still doesn't count for anything unless you want to trade it for a pristine model. It may have been considered in the asking price. (slight blem model)

Well, now that you got it, have fun with it. I'd like to be there when you shoot it, but a range report will do.
