First Revolver

You're going to enjoy your range time, especially w/full house magnum loads. One suggestion: See if you can find an experienced revolver shooter to work with, especially mastering the double action revolver trigger.

Very nice , especially for a 1st revolver! Even better as a birthday present from your wife! I picked up a 27-3 probably around 10 years ago or so , a nice shooter. Mine is the 8 3/8" version.

Well you blew it,,You Will never be able to upgrade to a better revolver now..You already got the best 357 ever made…congrats.

If you're interested in factory S&W wood target grips, you might try Midwest Gun Works. Here is link to a set of square butt rosewood target grips on their site:

Smith & Wesson N-Frame Grips, Square Butt/Square Frame, Checkered Rosewood: MGW

They also feature other N frame wood grips. I bought some walnut ones a couple of years ago. Don't be scared off by the out of stock notice. They get some in all the time and then they sell out. Just put in a notification request and you'll be alerted when they get them in stock. I only had to wait two weeks for the walnut ones to come back in stock after they went out of stock. But that was two years ago at the beginning of the pandemic.

By the way, I own a Model 27 4" and Model 29 6.5". Now thinking about adding a Model 57 and Model 460 Magnum to my revolver lineup.

Good luck.

Nice birthday gift!! As for ammo, it is beginning to show up on the shelves again although you may have to "hunt" a bit for it. If nothing else, broaden your chances for finding some by searching for .38 Special ammo in addition to the .357 Magnum stuff. It is a good alternative, and very good for practice and even self defense. Good luck, happy shooting, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Nice first S&W

Really like your first choice for a revolver, .357, and especially S&W. And if it's anything like my 27-3, pictured, you will enjoy shooting and owning it. And, you know what they say, "great minds think a like"…lol.

As stated by others you can shoot 357 and 38 spl rounds in your M27.

A Model 19 or 66 (K frame) may be a good choice for the wife. A little smaller frame than the N frame M27. Shoot 38 spl rounds for practice, 38 spl +P for home defense...

I too searched for 357 ammo. Found some at SGammo.com. Oklahoma company ships quick, $12 flat rate shipping for a little and I think free shipping over $200. They're soft tip metal jacket. Good in my Henry. About 80 cents a round.

That looks great! I don't see anything wrong with the condition. The aftermarket grips are an easy fix. I have 27-3s in 6" and 8 3/8". I'd love to find a 4" to complete the set.

Welcome to the Forum from the great state of Arizona. I bought my first S&W revolver in Tucson back in 1973 - a Model 19-3 new in the box. You'll love that Model 27 and it will likely be followed by more wheelguns - especially Smiths. It's not an addiction - it's a perfectly normal response!
