Cheaper? Yeah way.... Cheaper to buy and cheaper to shoot..

If it's going to be your first rifle why not invest in a good 22 AR variant to learn and get a feel for the firearm then work your way into the AR you want.

I'm sure others will disagree but it seems logical to me.

Maybe a less expensive, trouble free and easy to load firearm would be good for starting out. There's enough basics to learn without being preoccupied with mechanical difficulties.

Its all on opinion...

This wont be my first rifle more like my 12th....ish.....

I have quite a few bolt actions, shot guns, .22's, pistols, etc

So I am not a beginner in this field. Sorry i should have mentioned I know my way around guns. (NOT an expert but not a beginner)

I want a defense weapon but I have a S&W M&P .40 for that and I know a lot of people want AR-15's to hunt with but the .22lr is actually pretty lethal the only thing is you have to be accurate with it and hit in the right places.

(hopefully this doesnt start a huge flame/debate) but I know a lot of people always want bigger calibers, honestly if it comes out of a barrel at a good speed it is going to hurt and if you place it right, it will kill you.

Honestly, what's complicated about the AR15 style action? I've had a few rifles over the years, and it seems pretty easy to work on compared to some others.

Oh. for some reason when I read the title saying "First Rifle" I thought you meant first rifle, not 12th. My bad.

15-22 isn't a defensive weapon. Get a centerfire.

Yeah let me re-phrase my apologizes my dad passed away and left these rifle to me.

SO technically this will be the first rifle I buy myself so I look at it as MY first rifle you know?

the 15-22 is a trainer nothing more.. if thats not what you are wanting then the 15-22 is not for you... with that being said maybe s&w is doing a better job at training us than we thought.. hell ive had this thing apart way more than my real ars and i built them lol

Yeah here is where I am torn...

AR-15 is nice I like it (never shot one) but the fact the ammo is more costly then .22 it'll cost me quite a bit more to shoot.

The 15/22 is nice because the .22 is so cheap.
And just like the AR-15

So I have a .22 to shoot I guess I just see all the hype with the 15/22 and it just *seems* so cool?

I saw a AR-15 for 800 with 100 rounds shot through it. So a 15/22 is 500 add another 3 and I could have a ar-15.

So what would you guys do?

I understand.

What are your priorities for this purchase? Specifically, what is it you want this rifle for? And what do you expect it to be better at than other .22 rifles?

Well I have a few wants, which is what throws me off.

I do want something for possible hunting/home defense (besides my .40 which is by S&W and I love it lol).
I also want something customizable (which both seem to be good at that)
I want something fun to shoot (never shot the .223)
I want something that can have a can (both to my knowledge)

I want something that performs consistently and has minimal failures.

I never want to use my weapon as self defense but if I do, I want no second thoughts.

If you just want to have fun plinking and customizing then there are few firearms better suited than the 15-22. If you want much more than that forget it.

As Chatanooga stated, the 15-22 is not a defensive weapon. Good luck with whatever you decide. Both are fun.

Buy an ak and the ar15-22 for about the same price as a regular ar. That way you'll have the most reliable rifle and the most fun .22 money can buy.:D

buy an ak =P I never really liked those why do you say that about the ar?

I can buy a ar at 800 gonna shoot for 7 if I wana buy the ar-15

I think it's a well known fact that the ak is THE most reliable battle rifle on the planet. IMO the ammo is more devastating and cheaper. I personally own an arsenal ak which is kinda pricey but, wasr ak's are in the 5's. If your looking to buy an ar I don't know if you'd be happy with one that cost 7. Trust me you'll put another grand in accessories on it. I'm not knocking the ar's-I like them a lot. But, if I could grab just one weapon in a SHTF situation it's gonna be an ak. Plus, I want you to have a rifle and this ar15-22;)

Oooh i like the AK47 idea with the 15-22.

It sounds like if it were not for the $$$$$, you would want an AR-15 so just go with that if you can get one for $800.

If you decide to go with the 15-22 let me know where i can get that AR:D

Ok so someone crash course me in AK's then I dont know to much about them whats a good price I am now interested.

Because honestly the AR-15 would be a queen with a scope thats about it, it would chill unless stuff went crazy then Id grab it and head out.

Whats the ak shoot sorry I know nothing about ak's and its cheaper ammo then ar?
