First Smith 357*** ** New Stocks

Another thread is open referring to 19-5's, and make mention of the DSS guns. Judging from the serial range talked about mine should be close ALW66xx. Would you guys spend the $50 to get the letter? If it is a DSS gun would it increase its value ?? Either way its gonna be a carry gun. Just kinda curious now.

It could, but probably not too much $$.

Call S&W. Ask to speak to Roy Jinks. Give him the serial # and ask if this was originally sold to the DSS. If yes, than you may want to spend the $$, but it may not be worth the extra $50 you just spent.

I did the above with a 13-3 I own to see if it had any FBI connection. I left him a message and he actually called me back an hour later. I've spoken to him a couple times now.

I saw one like that recently, also parkerized or bead blasted hard to tell not close up, but they were asking A LOT more than you paid for yours. I think I like yours better.

Beautiful 19 snub!!

I own one of the DSS 19-5 2.5" snubs. It is in the AYP serial prefix IIRC. I bought it from a very knowledgeable member here who knew I was looking for one. :)

It is identical to yours. One of the distinguishing features on the 2.5" DSS 19's - though not on ALL of them - is the wider trigger. Not quite as wide a target trigger. Wider than a combat trigger. Smooth as well.

The $50 letter may be the only way to confirm it for sure, but I'd bet double that amount that its a DSS 19.

Anyways, even if its not, its a beautiful 19 and it doesn't get any better than that. ;) Regards 18DAI

Now I'm even more curious :) Anyone happen to know what load those guys carried in the 19s ?

They carried and trained with Federal NyClad 125 grain 38+P.

I'm using Speer 135 grain SB 38+P. It is a very accurate round out of a snub 19. Good street performance as well. Regards 18DAI

If you are going to shoot .357mag ammo, the rubber grips would probably be more comfortable and provide a better hold. The Ahrends will look better and be fine for .38spl loads but be a real handful for full-house .357's.

This is just my experience, wood grips for looks and rubber grips for shooting. Of course, you got to realize I am an old man now !!:D

I found my scores are a little higher with the wood grips, plus they tend to conceal better as they are less prone to print.
For heavy loads on the range, perhaps the goodyears enjoy a slight advantage.

That thing looks SWEET!!!!

I just noticed two differences between your 19 snub and my DSS 19 snub.

My DSS snub has a case hardened hammer and trigger. Yours are the same type/shape but appear in the above photo to have been high polished. Also mine has a black blade front sight with no insert. Yours has the standard red insert (which I'm more used to and actually prefer). Every DSS 19 I've come across had black on black sights.

I'd suspect that while yours is likely a DSS gun, someone changed those two features out to suit their own tastes. Regards 18DAI

I also own a 2.5" 19-5 which I found out belonged to a Kansas City detective who used it as a back up gun for his regular 66 2.5". It spent most of it's time in a safe as a spare and it shows it. I really like the contrast of the whole gun you purchased. Very unique and clean! The carry load for mine which shoots very well is Remingtons mid-range 125 grain Golden Saber .357 rounds. They are very accurate and easy on the gun and plenty powerfull enough. I like the feel and balance of the 2.5" 19' and 66's for a packing revolver. I'm sure you will enjoy yours as well. Let us know how she shoots!

Yup, gittin' them snow tires off of that little honey made a whole bunch of difference.

That is one nice lookin' rig.

I like the polished trigger mainly because I've learned that if I'm going to do some fun time range blasting it pays to put on the band aid before the trigger makes a blister but yours shouldn't have that problem. And that is some gorgeous cocobolo there.

Finally got leather today...not ideal but I got a Bianchi 5BN and a Desantis pancake.

Lobo will be ordered soon. Just needed something fast to use for qualifications next week.
