First Smith Revolver Purchase. Model 19-3 vs Model 27

Not to throw a complete monkey wrench in your plans... try looking for a 681. Stainless steel, fixed sights, L frame... They are quite nice to shoot, and you can fire any of your magnums loads you want.

I've got a 19 and a 681, for what uses you described, I'd pick my 681 to do all that. That being said, the 19 is a little smaller, and I'd assume easier to pack around the woods.

I'll look into a 681 if located. There is a local gun show I'm visiting this weekend...hopefully I can find something there.

I've found a Smith 28 for $580 shipped. This would cost less than the Smith 19-3 Nickel after taxes. Any thoughts?

A M28 would be great, I love mine. Same as the M27, just duller finish and no topstrap checkering.
That price is a bit high, but not too out of line, assuming it is a M28-2 or older.

Jim,

It is a M28-2. This might be an option instead, though I do like the nickel finish on the 19-3.

I just returned from browsing some of the recommendations. I don't like how the 27boxes felt in my hand. I stumbled on a brand new 686-3 with a 6" barrel. Dealer has the original box and paperwork. Wanted $595 for her. I liked the way it felt, though the barrel was a bit longer than I originally wanted. This wont be a carry piece so I might scoop her up. Thanks for the recommendation on the 686.

Random thoughts, Mod 19, vs Mod 27. I have owned different barrel lengths of both.

Assuming equal barrel lengths:
The Mod 19 is lighter and smaller. It is really a 38 Special/Light Duty 357 Mag. A great carry gun.

The Mod 27 is a little bigger/heavier. If you plan to shoot a lot of 357 Mags, go with the Mod 27. Also if you are getting this gun for field carry, then the difference in size and weight from a Mod 19 is not that big a deal, IMHO, as the wife and I carry a Mod 29 always when in the field. WE do not fine the n Frame to big/heavy to carry.

Also the Mod 27 is still the Flagship of the S&W Revolver line.
They are nice revolvers.
