You will need a good set of calipers, accurate to .001". Dillon RCBS and others have adequate digital calipers under $50. Use the calipers to set case length, seating depth, belling and crimp diameters, among other dimensions.
A digital scale saves a lot of time in setup, and encourages you to check charge weight frequently. You can hit the tare button, rather than dumping the pan each time. A good one will cost $100 or more. You will find it takes at least 3 drops to stabilize a press after an extended break (overnight?). I average 3 stable drops to set a weight, and spot check every 50 to 100 rounds during a run.
If you have a slot for it, a powder check die gives you peace of mind against double drops and skipped drops.
With a progressive press, pick components and a load, and stick with it. Get a single stage press for experimentation. I load on the hot side, but no closer than 0.2 grains to the maximum. I choose a powder and load which nearly fills the case without compression.
Go for rhythm and consistency, rather than speed. Avoid distractions, including talk radio, conversations and phone calls. If you get interrupted, clear the press. Don't eat or drink when reloading, and absolutely don't smoke. There's a joke in the chemical industry, "wash your hands BEFORE going to the bathroom!" it's no joke.
