I remember years ago we had a tough old rancher for one of our
2 senators. There was an episode where someone tried to rob
him in an elevator. Don't remember if the robber had a gun or
knife, but it don't matter. Senator Jordan just cold cocked him.

In the small Montana town where I went to college, the sheriff
stopped a trucker one night. He was making too much noise
engine breaking. I was told that the trucker started to say
"aint no hick town sheriff going to tell me how to drive.....
that's all he got out before Sheriff Thomas cold cocked him.

Oh the good old days. Today the senator would be violating
the robber's rights and the sheriff would be accused of police
brutality.

Whenever someone hits another
person as with a fist, then you'd
better be ready for any consequences
if the person hit is seriously
injured or killed. It doesn't matter
what the intentions were.

So, yes, what was acceptable in
certain days is not acceptable now.
Nor was it even acceptable in days
of yore but laws were more lax
then regarding liabilities.

I used a small flat sap concealed in the palm of my hand as an attitude adjustment instrument a few times back fifty years ago as a LEO.
Surprisingly effective. I’d go to jail today.

My F-I-L went to the Police academy in 1958, he was a MC cop for a few years until Columbus did away with them in 1963. Officially he never was required to carry a night stick although he has some success with them during the riots in the late 60's and 70's!

All his duty uniforms had a slit pocket on the side of the right leg. It was exactly where his hand fell naturally, and contained a "Horizontal Sap"! A 4 ounce lead bar covered in leather on a "D" type of grip (Shaped like a saddle stirrup) I Never saw it hit a person, but he did a number on a guy's front door with it to be heard over the party! I have had other cops tell me he was amazing in a couple of oversized bar fights, just strolling through the mob, leaving unconscious bodies in his wake.

One of hubby's big macho friends from childhood, learned from his father's fist to speak respectfully to his mama. One day he spoke rudely to his mother, knew he did wrong, and stayed out all night to let his parents anger cool off. When he quietly opened the door to sneak into the darkened house at 4am, a fist impacted his face and sent him sprawling unconscious on the sidewalk. He woke up two hours later.
The son was young, big, and strong, probably a foot taller than his father. The father was a nice gentleman, that was tough as iron from working hard all his life as a stone mason. The son never made that mistake again.

Couldn’t carry a sap On my Dept., but could use sap-gloves for a while until even they were prohibited. In 1990 I retired and went to work as a Special Deputy US Marshal (Court Security Officer) and among the issue items was a great big “Gonzales 187” sap! It was so heavy that we couldn’t really carry it in the light weight slacks we were issued. It remained in the lockers, a reminder of the good-old-days.

I had to look that up and I believe I found a reproduction.
2 # ? Yikes. And there’s a four pounder below it.

Nonsense.....
Are you implying your gonna let someone
pound the snot out of you ?
If I go down, I will be swinging and suffer the "consequences".

My Grandpa was a baker in a cafe in San Francisco back in the '30s. They fed a lot of the guys building the Golden Gate Bridge. Boy those guys could eat. Anyway, one morning 2 of them got to yelling at each other and then, POW, one guy puts the other down with a perfect left to the jaw. The next morning they were both back for breakfast, best of friends. After a huge breakfast they would load up their lunch pails with as many sandwiches that would fit. Then fill their thermos bottles with coffee. Business was good That is where he met a 15 year old waitress, Grandma. What a different time. Sure miss them and their stories.

Iggy, did it look like something like the attached photo;)?

Mine was similar to the one in Dave Keith’s picture but it was only about six inches long.
It fit in the sap pocket of my uniform pants without sticking out.
People only saw me slap guys with what appeared to an open hand.
I always wound up on a detail checking IDs in bars in a college town on the evening shift. The football players were bigger than me.

You miss the point of the OP's post and my
reply. I didn't say you couldn't defend
yourself.

In the context of my first posting and
some following examples given, our
stalwarts are sucker punching some
luckless big mouths. Do they deserve
brain damage, phyical injuries or
death?

Here are a few. These little beauties were made by forum member Dissector (aka Scott Foster). Works of art. If nothing else, a tap on the side of the head with one of these will sure as heck get someone's attention...and darn quick, too!:D

By the way...is Scott still on this forum? Haven't heard from him in a while.

Seems to me that both the robber in the elevator and the trucker had made the first volley...
