Is it possible to put the guts (extractor, ratchet, etc) from a cylinder, install the parts in a new cylinder, and the new cylinder "work" (carry-up, be in time, etc) in the gun?
I have 4 S&W revolvers of mine with a different cylinder installed by using all the original parts and swapping just the cylinder. Most needed the endshake set but they otherwise dropped in. They're all new style.
"May work", often doesn't.
Just because the cylinder snaps into the frame is no sign the cylinder really fits properly.
New cylinder installations have to be fitted and checked for:
Cylinder head space.
Cylinder end shake.
Barrel/cylinder gap.
Chamber/bore alignment.
Timing.
