I would have never thought of this...
But, I might now
Think you'd probably ruin a BG's day.

Many years back and as he has died I will relate this story.

A buddy of mine had a nice 40' boat and was out cruising right off the cost of New York started to return and as he was approaching a bridge saw a bunch of youths standing on a bridge he had to go under.

As he approached the bridge said youths had a bunch of rocks and started pelting his boat. Now my buddy at that time carried a AR 15 and a couple legally registered hand guns when he went out.

The kids kept throwing rock and bottles and he grabbed his flare gun and put a couple close enough that he got their attention and they took off running.

He then went up the river to his birth spot and never made a report. Guess the youths did not either as nothing more ever happened on a legal level!

Non lethal deterrent sounds like a great idea to me.
Of course now a days - you would just get sued by a absent parent, not doing their job.

Oh ya burn the house down............
Question; can civilians buy beanbag shotgun rounds?
Might be a better idea than flairs.........1st one or two then buckshot??????

Hmmm I don't know bout bean bags shots/rubber slugs?
I don't even know if they have rock salt rounds anymore?

I know a couple of guys who have soaked some paintballs in some ghost pepper hot sauce. Watched one of them get rid of a skunk out of his shed, that way.
I don't know who ran faster - me or the skunk....

Yes, there are commercial non-lethal shotguns rounds available to the public. Can't recall the website but Google will do that for you. To my knowledge "rock salt" rounds were never produced commercially. Projectiles that can be hand loaded into a 12ga shotgun shell are only limited by your imagination. Crayola rounds maybe my all time favorite.

When shooting a skunk distance and wind direction are your friends! :) hardcase60

Beanbag rounds - Wouldn't they be considered use of deadly force? I would think the shooter would have to prove that he was justified, as in any other self defense situation.

I remember a truck driver telling me that flare pistols were somewhat popular with long haul truckers, providing a measure of defensive capability for those who had to drive through states with restrictive firearms laws. I suppose that if confronted with an aggressive thug at very close range it would be better than nothing. After watching the OP's video link I would not want to be on the receiving end of one of those flares!

there are marking flares which consist of an aluminum tube about 2 inches long filled with blue powder. they are not incendiary but will punch through a house door or 3/8 plywood at close range. both of my girls had these as self defense when attending college. they carried them from their apt to their car and kept them in their vehicle while doing their daily routine and I was not worried about campus rules because they are not firearms. I have experimented with these in the polish flare pistols and find them to be very strong. imagine the bad guy with a 26.5 mm blue hole. if you did have to use it then firearms law applies or at least that's how it was explained to me.

Answer: Yes, at least around here . . . As for whether or not to use them for home defense, I leave that to you to decide.

Just thinking they might be a better option than a flare......and burning down the house........ LOL

Deadly force.... maybe..... but might demonstrate intent/moderate escalation of force ....... still have to be justified in firing.

I carried hand-held flares when hiking and back-country camping many years ago. They were kept in an accessible pocket in case of dangerous critters. This was before bear spray was popularized, and before I owned a gun. Luckily they were never tried against bruins, but there were a couple of very close calls up in Denali.
