Does anybody have any fovorites in this catagory, without going nuts on price, because it is " tactical"? A word that I am fostering a growing dislike for. Any comments on the mag lite LED models. They come to mind first, because they are USA made. Thanks

The only brand I use anymore is Streamlight.
At home, at work, in my pickup, and in the woods.
Quality second to none, Made in the USA, and lifetime warranty.

All of my Maglites are very dusty these days.

First off I'm not a flashlight junkie. Outside of work I just look for a durable light that meets my needs. With that out of the way....

For a compact flashlight I still like surefire 6P models especially since I upgraded the lens to LED for more output and runtime. One of the big benefits is the long shelf life on the batteries.

I bought several of the Mag-lite LED flashlights (3D, 2D and mini-mag) last winter during the Christmas specials. I'm impressed with the improvement in output and runtime. I wish that these had been available years ago. I now have them in each vehicle, my camper, tornado shelter, and home. At the current cost I was able to equip all these locations for well under $150.00.

I go with Streamlight. I still have an old Streamlight 20X that I've had for years. It's a great light, and it even doubles as a formidable weapon on those occasions when you have to get up close and personal. Oops...I guess we're not supposed to use them for that anymore, are we?:o Anyway....they're great lights.

Another vote for Streamlight. I have several that get used almost daily. Top quality and reasonable prices.

I agree with your "growing dislike for the work Tactical". In fact it totally turns me off. It has been so overused, all the "wannabee's" buy up everything and create an artificial demand. What's wrong with walnut and blue steel. I bought a small pocket size lite from Walmart for $30 that puts out 120 Lumens and does most everything I need. I have a 3 cell original mag light in my drawer within reach and it does all the rest.

Like Goldstar225 I have a pile of Mag-lights. Some are 30 years old. But the real surprise was last fall, I was clean out the barn and came across an old emergency kit based on a Band-Aid tin box. It expired medications in it that expired in 1995, so the kit was assembled in the early 90 or so. In the kit was a Mag-lite Solitaire with a alkaline Energizer AAA battery that was still holding a charge and the flashlight was completely usable.

For the powerfully bright compact power it is hard to beat Surefire. I have a bottom of the line 2-cell (CR-123) plastic body, but I don't know the model #. It had a xenon or halogen bulb and people told me it would burn out in 1 or 2 months normal use, I was careful to not use the light more than a few minutes without letting it cool off and the bulb lasted almost 1 1/2 years of daily use. the new bulb was about $42 for the LED (the light was a gift and in the $38 or less range) that replacement bulb has lasted 4 1/2 years of much harder use! The first high intensity light I owned is a Surefire M-3, it slides on gun rails, uses 2 CR-123 Lithium batteries and has been on my 870 for 18 years or longer. It and the rail adapter were about $40 back in the 90's. It has lit up a sizable number of raccoon in the night and has gone on intruder hunts 4 or 5 times (no one there thank God!) I bought dad a 3 cell CR-123 dressy Streamlight for Christmas about 10 or 12 years ago, and it is still going strong. To get into the real small Surefire will run a small fortune. For most pre-positioned flash lights I use Mag-lites with lithium batteries (good to -40 degrees F) In the camper and glove box.

Batteries are available everywhere, but pricey! The best price locally I've found is at Lowe's. I buy Surefire brand because Duracell and Energizer are a dollar or 2 more each, this is because they are made for fast discharge in cameras.

I have turned to the high-output (900 lumen) Ultrafire LED WF-501B with the rechargeable Ultrafire Li-ion 18650 battery for all my needs. It is so bright that it can be used as a weapon for temporary blinding if you are bothered by a night crawler. I bought it off Ebay. It came with 2 batteries, a charger, belt case, and the light for about $40.00. It could be mounted on one of my shotguns if needed. These new LEDs desire your attention.

I went a different route: I got L.L. Bean wind-up flashlights for both cars, my bedroom and the guest bedroom. No batteries to worry about. Gave one to my daughter and daughtger-in-law to carry in their cars.

However in my 'AWOL Bag', I carry a little Fenix for use in the motel. It runs on one AA battery, and has a high and low position. High illuminates the whole room like daylight. Unfortunately, it's round and has a tendency to roll off a table; I epoxied a penny to the side of it, so there's a flat place and it won't roll.

Is that the same one Amazon has for $17.45 with free shipping?

For your pocket, the Surefire E2E, E2D, or G2Z are good choices. I converted two of the above to LED. They are very bright and don't use a lot of power. Definitely go with LED. The above all have tail cap activation switches.

I have a Streamlight ProTac 2L that I like. Available for about $40. It went through the wash machine and came out just fine. Small light that puts out really good power. I can even shine deer with it!!

The 2L is programmable so you can change which mode it turns on in. It has high, low and strobe.

You really have to take those stated light outputs with a grain of salt.... I've seen 200 lumen lights that aren't anywhere near as bright as a 100 lumen light.

.

Streamlight does make a quality light and have several innovative models. They are only a few miles away and I've had several friends work there over the years. But according to them , many components now come from overseas and are merely assembled and/or finished here. IOW , the minimal amount of US labor to qualify for US Gov't contracts.

I like the Surefire products. I carry a Fury (500 lumen) almost all the time, and have one mounted on my carbine. They have now brought out a 3 cell 1000 lumen Fury that I will upgrade to on my carbine eventually.
