Honestly I would never give my dog any of that stuff. When I was younger I put that stuff on a dog we had and I swear it was the cause of her cancer. If it was me I'd do a flea dip.

In my experience there is no one product that will eliminate a flea problem. You need to treat the yard, give the pet a flea bath, and apply flea powder daily. In addition, buy one of the products from the vet that you put on his back.

We've used Advantage for the past four years or so and it's always worked well until this year. I think we had a hatch of bionic fleas! We comb, we shampoo, we comb again and the little buggers are still wreaking havoc with our two poor puppies. Neither cat seems to be having as big of a problem this year though....strange.

When my dogs were having fles problems a few months ago I got a product from my vet that has worked very well. It is called "Comfortis" and comes in a chewable pill form.

I saw results (less scratching) in less than an hour after the first dose. It supposedly lasts a month. The only drawback was that it was expensive.

You can try food grade Diatomaceous Earth just make sure it food grade not the swimming pool DE. Or we have used Advantage just be forewarned that K9 Advantix II should not be used around cats.

We used those oil on the back of the neck treatments for years. until 2010. THat was the year one of my dogs was unable to stand and started foaming at the mouth within minutes of the application. The manufacturers hotline person told us to wash the dog immediately and multiple times in dish washing Detergent. ( Apparently one of the few soaps that will pull the oil out of the dogs skin.) She recovered but died within a 18 mos of kidney failure. I'd rather have a few flea's than to see a dog go through that again..

We've always used "Frontline" never had any fleas, ticks or sick dogs. However there is probably no prescription medicine that doesn't have bad side effects for someone. (or some dog)

I use Frontline Plus, although I don't have as much faith in it as I used to. Molly seldom has fleas, at least none that I notice. Once last year she had a lot of them about 2 weeks after I had put the Frontline on her. I called the Frontline 800 number and asked if she could get another dose sooner than 30 days. He said no, you have to wait at least 30 days between applications. So I went to the vet and bought one Comfortis chewable. Soon after she took it I combed her with a flea comb and almost all the fleas that came off her were already close to death. The stuff really does work, but as boykinlp says, it's expensive.

I also use confortis. It is expensive but worth it. It comes in a chewable form. Our golden retriever is allergic of fleas and this is the only thing that works. You can also try Trifexus. It is a heart wormer and flea medicine in one.

We use this for our Golden Retriever and find it works well. Yes, it is expensive, but I think worth it.

I've used Frontline once a month and have had no problems when she's just in the yard. However, some neighbors babysat the dog for a couple of days, and their dogs have fleas, so she came home with them. To get rid of them I gave her a bath with Espree Flea & Tick Shampoo. She's flea free again.

It is pricey. But, it works VERY well for about 30 days and it is much easier to administer than anything else I ever used. One chewable pill a month and that's it. Highly recommended! All three of my dogs take it. One of my Bassets is flea allergic. It really saved him from misery.

I use Comfortis on all four dogs...Dosage depends on weight...very effective. 2 Tiny Toy Poodles and 2 German shepherds.

I used the oil type one time behind shoulders and base of tail. Our Jack Russell started having a reaction to it. He started trying to get it off of him by rolling on carpet. I figured out it was burning him. He became very restless and it affected his breathing. He hated baths but drew a cold water bath and bathed him and used dawn dishwashing liquid. He returned to the bath two more times on his own an wanted more baths.

DO NOT USE THIS STUFF.

Fleas

My Bassett was covered with Fleas...went to the vet Sat to get some frontline, they said they had stopped using it, because it wasn't effective anymore....for whatever reason.....they gave me a tube of Vetra 3D.....I bathed the dog with flea and ticket shampoo Sat evening.....let her dry overnight....dosed her Sunday mrng with the Vectra 3 D....checked her yesterday...still had a few fleas.....but nothing like on Saturday...checked today.....no fleas.....used frontline for years, but this Vectra 3D gets rid of fleas...
