What kind of markings? Are you talking about marks left from having a laser sight mounted to the barrel and frame?

Presuming your 617 has a satin finish, a copper "Chore Boy" of matching grit (from the grocery store) is one very good way to touch up and match the satin finish.

The s&w markings, logos, ect are lasered on instead of roll marked.

I have 2 Smiths 686 mtn gun and 629 mtn gun that ALL the laser marking are gone from use. LM's are a super cheap way of marking things and won't hold up I wouldn't use any solvent of any type(or use it in holster) if you want to preserve them.
