Fog Up Window

My Toyota rear window has become unclear.
Attempting to clean it from both sides has not had any success.
Is this condition inside the panels ? Is there a solution ?

Take the car to your local Safelite dealer and get their opinion! Safelite is the largest auto safety glass manufacturer in the U.S. It really makes no difference the cause as the cloudiness is no doubt in the mid-layer of the windshield and the glass will have to be replaced. If you have auto safety inspection in your state (Florida does not!) it won't pass annual inspection!

It is caused by the layers becoming delaminated. I doubt your vehicle is new enough to be a warranty issue, but what do I know.

Back glass is tempered glass - it is NOT laminated glass.

Is it inside or outside? What are the other windows like? If it's inside and you have a rear window defogger, you're limited on what you can do. If it's vinyl sweat, all the other windows should be fogged, too. A strong vinegar solution should take it off - then follow it up with glass cleaner of your choice - I like Spray Away

If its outside, 0000 steel wool and chrome polish should take just about anything off without damaging the glass provided whatever fogged it up didn't etch the glass.

BTW I was in the auto glass business for many years, safelite is the LAST place I'd take my car.

Again, the back glass is tempered NOT laminated safety glass.

Down here my go to has been Charlie's Auto Glass since the 80's.

Agree. Safelite may be the largest, but they are "not" that great. They ruined my front windshield and now I am "stuck" unless I get it replaced by another source. Most car repair shops will give you the name of a reputable dealer -- and it won't be "safelite".

I had the same thing happen to the windshield of my Nissan Maxama.
No questions, dealer just replaced.

See this too many times on this Forum, folks are quick to knock a company but offer no suggestion.
Down here my go to has been Charlie's Auto Glass since the 80's.

Since most glass companies local and very few are regional, how can I make a suggestion when I don't live in the area the OP lives in?

I won't use SFLT due to out of bend, and/or distorted glass - especially if they manufacture it, the way they overbook and treat their installers and pressure them to get it done. And because of that pressure to get it done and move on to the next appointment, things are rushed and damage to vehicles happens - a lot. I've heard and seen too many horror stories. Especially with their mobile installs.

I was in the business many years and I won't use them, but that's just me.

Throw a brick through it and call the insurance company. Actually,
I’m kidding, sorta. The back window is hard enough to clean as it is, let alone the possible bad glass. Maybe try that stuff they use on foggy headlights, unless it’s bad for the defrost heater. I usually don’t use the back window as I try to see what’s in front of me. Sorry, that was just wrong! Good luck & maybe let us know how you fixed it.

I will add my 7 cents on here. (Amount increased do to inflation)

I have had to use Safelite twice and both times I was satisfied.

The first was back about 1999, I had a *-- appear dead center in front of my drivers position. Give it time amd it will grow. Called my insurance company, they called Safelite, arrangements were made. I went to work put my pick up in the garage at the company I was working for as the weather was bad. He showed up on time fixed it and I was able to drive home a few hours later.

Second time was last year. A big -------------------------------------- appeared where the defroster air hit the windshield. Same as before called my insurance company arrangements were made. He came on time to my house did the work and told me not to drive for 12 more hours.

FWIW I never paid a charge for both of these incidents. Perhaps I got lucky but Safelite worked out well for me!

A friend of mine just had the windshield on his late model SUV replaced, he told me it cost him close to $1000 and three days to set up the computer for all of the sensors. They don't just pop them out and glue them back in like Safelite says...maybe if its pre computer days, they are glued in today but there are all kinds of sensors and **** to hook up depending on the model of vehicle.

It took about an hour and although the wife had to take it back in to re-set the computer gadgets in the windshield, we were quite pleased with the service. The set up was impressive-well equipped shop, about 20 fully equipped service vans all staffed and loading up for the day's calls as I showed up at the shop. Gone are the days of the local glass shops, at least where I am located.
My dealership is in New Iberia, Safelite is on the west side of Lafayette and I live in little old Jeanerette.

The DOT code # will give manufacturer info

The biggest aftermarket glass maker is called Fuyao. Despite the name, they actually manufacture glass in the US. Good quality equal to or in some cases better than the OEM. They also produce OEM glass for many makes (including GM and Ford).
