For The Car

I have a S&W M&P 9mm and want to have it quickly accessable in the car (not in the glove box or console) yet secure (not sliding around freely on the floor). What works for you guys. I have a Florida CCP so I'm not impared by the 2 step rule. Thanks for your thoughts.

I agree. Bare minimum would be to store it in a lockable glovebox, center console or safe/locked case that is secured to the vehicle.

There are times when it's not possible to take the gun with you, when you exit the vehicle. Or at least, not legally. For example, my wife has to go to the Dr or PT frequently, and they are both located in a hospital. In Texas, you cannot legally carry in a hospital. So, my choices are to either leave my gun at home, leave it in the car, or violate the law. I don't want to leave my gun at home, and I'm not going to violate the law, so I leave my gun in the car. I have a gun safe in the car, so it's as secure as I can reasonably make it. There is no 100% infallible way to secure the gun...especially if someone steals the car itself...but it's the best solution I can make, and still have my gun with me when we are in the car.

See numbered page 39, towards the bottom, letter (i):
(i) Subsections (b)(4), (b)(5), (b)(6), and (c) do not apply if the actor
was not given effective notice under Section 30.06.​

(b)(4) is the hospital. So they have to actually post the 30.06 sign now, just like other places (which your hospitals very well may - I believe several around me do).

That said, I am NOT a lawyer. That is just what I personally believe it says :)

In my last car, i took a nylon holster for my Taurus M85 revolver and screwed it in by my right foot on the center console. Then i took a piece of industrial sheet rubber and molded it around the holster and screwed that down so you could not see the weapon from outside of the vehicle. I found a piece of carpeting similar to the color of the console and covered the rubber to blend it all in. All i had to do was reach down, stick my hand inside the rubber and grab the firearm and i was ready to go. does anyone know where to find the Blackhawk! holster that twists on to a puck that you screw to the inside of your car somewhere? I looked on their website and could not find it.

Yes, you are correct. The hospitals around us, or at least all the ones we have been to, have 30.06 signs posted...so, I was incorrect to say it is illegal in Texas, because there may be hospitals that are not posted; to be accurate, I should have said I cannot legally carry in the hospitals we go to because they are posted.
 
Just my 30+ years as a police officer and NRA instructor. In the case of an accident, your pistol when out of your control can not only become a projectile but it can also be ejected from the vehicle and be accessible to anyone (children, idiots, crack-heads...). Bad Idea.

If you're going to carry, then carry. Simply having a firearm accessible is not the great idea it might seem. A pistol out of your control, stuck somewhere in your vehicle not locked away from unauthorized people, is a huge liability, on your shoulders, waiting to happen..... Just sayin'.
 
DenverSteve: Makes a good point, I have been upside down 2X at 15 mph backwards, 40 mph backwards, barrel roll, end over ( black ice ). My Sigma remained in my Kramer holster both time as did the 2 mags in the Kramer pouch, but I got hit with dirt, glass, almost by maglight ( which is now secured in all vehicles) book, tissue box. Basically nothing hard and heavy hit me in a soft spot. I will admit to tucking a j frame in a holster in the drivers side map pouch for easy access when I am plowing snow, since the Sigma is under the snowmobile suit. There are places to put firearms locked in a vehicle, talk to your local PD. Be Safe,
 
Hmmm. If you're going to carry a gun, carry it in the same place all the time. I get that seated in a car presents issues with drawing the gun but if it's always in the same place you will know where it is. And practice drawing from a seated position in your car so you know how to deal with that situation if it should ever arise. Practice consistency. Same gun, same ammo, same holster, same draw, same everything. Remember, only perfect practice makes perfect.

Just went to a guy safety class. The instructor related a personal experience where he would pocket carry and holster carry both in the 2 o'clock and 5 o'clock position. He related the experience where he need to pull his gun and in the excitement of the moment he could not find it. He reach for the 5 o'clock position and when the gun wasn't there panic set in. Now he carries in the exact same position every time.
 
I've thought about installing a holster somewhere to make drawing the firearm from inside a vehicle easier. But then I realize that the most dangerous thing I do with my pistol every day is holster it (this is when NDs most commonly occur). So, no holster secured to the console...It stays on me.
 
I might have missed it but you don't state what you drive. If it happens to be a vehicle with a split front seat, look into one of these: Home of the Original Remora No Clip IWB Concealment Holster. I use it to CCW carry and wedge inbetween the front seat divider slot while driving-the holster will not shift around, very adhearing to anything-around $30 bucks.
