For you guys with Suppressors

Which can would you recommend ? I want it to be able to be taken apart by myself and cleaned.

This will be my first purchase of a suppressor and I am still hammering out all of the specifics of how the whole process goes.

My City is said to be ok with signing off on them, so I should not need to create a trust. I am heading down to the police station in the morning to double check this info, and assuming it is correct I will then be looking for which one to purchase.

My 15-22 came with a flash hider, will I need any further modifications upon removing it to install a suppressor ? Will the threading match up ? Are they pretty much a standard across the board and should be good to go ?

I live in Virginia, and anyone in the state that could give me any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Buying a suppressor is like buying a vehicle – it just depends on its use and how much you want to spend. If you are looking for a dedicated 22lr suppressor, the Silencerco Stainless Sparrow is hard to beat. It is not the cheapest 22lr can, but it really fits the bill for most people. You can run up to 5k rounds through it before cleaning. It is a stainless take apart can, so you can use more harsh methods of cleaning as well.

Another good one for the money – is the YHM Mite. It is a cheaper can and is made out of aluminum.It needs to be taken apart after each use can cleaned. You cannot use harsh cleaning methods with it since it is made out of aluminum. I own both and really like the Sparrow since I do not have to clean it after each use, but the Mite is lighter and has a better feel on my M&P 15-22.

If you are looking for a multi caliber can – then the Liberty Mystic is about as good as it gets. 30 cal down to 22lr. It is a large can and really looks out of place on a 15-22, but it will work… It is a user serviceable can as well – but this one will cost you $$$.

As for your threaded barrel – you are good to go… The thread pitch is ½ x 28 which is standard for 22 cal suppressors. You would want to get a spacer since your rifle barrel threads are a tad bit too long for most suppressors.

As for the trust you mentioned – that is really the way to go (IMO). Your trustees can have access to your toys without breaking the law and if something were to happen to you, your toys will have a home to go to. This is another topic for a thread in itself…

A lot of people go the individual route and are happy with it – you will have to decide…

Nothing is wrong with a $200 mite but suppressors are like luggage you keep it for life! I would invest in a good one! I have real good luck with Liberty Suppressors

Cleaning the mite so often just dropped it off my list.

After reading all night I am down to the AAC Element or SS Sparrow. I am willing to spend more money on it since it is such a hassle to obtain. I only want to do this once.

I wanted to add a suggestion on your quest to find the "best" .22 suppressor. I own three different ones. I have read and asked the same questions multitudes of times. Ultimately, I decided on the SWR Spectre. It is full auto rated, stainless which lets you use the "dip" method of cleaning which is much easier and efficient, can be used for .22 long rifle, .22 magnum, .17 HMR, and 5.7x28 calibers. I can only hear the hammer fall on my CZ 452 rifle and it is exceptionally quiet on all my pistols as well. You should be aware that many cans that perform well on a pistol may or may not perform well on a rifle and vice versa, as strange as that is. My other choice for .22 lr only would be the sparrow in stainless. Whatever you do, do not buy one made with any aluminum to save money or weight. It just won't hold up to a lifetime of use and limits your cleaning abilities. Also, make sure you buy a can that can be user cleaned by removing the internal parts. I have an Element. The cool factor wore off much faster than I thought it would. I hope to see some benefit to teaching my kids to shoot without the noice inducing flinch factor.

I looked into a trust and was afraid to do it myself and lawyers contacted all thought suppressors were illegal.

You can leave your suppressor to your legal heir with no transfer tax. Form F5?.

Another way to get a silencer is, if you have an established FLP (Family Limited Partnership) or LLP (Limited Liability Partnership).
Only those in the partnership can use the silencer.
This is what I did (FLP), so my family can keep the silencers without the need of any transfer tax to the Feds.

Everyone has their own criteria for a rimfire can. When I was searching through the endsless choices here was my criteria.

Reputable Manufacturer.
No cleaning.
No first round pop.
Relatively light and short.

I chose the YHM Wraith.

When I say no cleaning, of course it has to be cleaned but rarely and not by me. YHM recommends the can be serviced every 50k rounds. I sent mine in early around 20-25k rounds. Cost something like $15 for FedEx ground. YHM cleaned it up and sent it back free of charge. At 50k rounds the aluminum baffle will likely need to be replaced, and that will cost $100. Let's see... 50k rounds of CCI SV cost me $2,500 + tax. Shoot them all suppressed for $100 and no bother with creating cleaning concoctions and regular scrubbing/scrapping/grinding sessions. Works for me.

The larger diameter 1.25'' gives the can 50% more volume than a 1'' can of the same length. It's a nice quiet low tone and no first round pop with pistols that many rimfire cans suffer. I use 1x red dots on my pistols so the larger diameter doesn't interfere with using sights.

Weighs 5oz and 5.5in long. Though, it gains a couple ounces to 20-25k rounds.

As far as the 15-22, I like the more proportional sized can to that of an AR, compared to the typical skinny 1'' cans hanging off the muzzle.

Making a selection is a lot easier once you know what your criteria is. There's a lot of hype to sift through. Good luck in your search.

Here is a mini review I did on it:

Here are some pics and more info on the Kestrel 22 suppressor from Huntertown Arms. In my case, I had the standard Guardian 22 and then had the standard K baffles upgraded to the Kestrel core, a service which Huntertown Arms offers for $200 for customers that have their Guardian 22 already. You can purchase the Kestrel 22 for an MSRP of $399.

The Kestrel 22 is 1.085" OD x 6" long, and is rated for full-auto .22LR, as well as semi-auto .22WMR, .17HMR, 5.7x28, and .22 Hornet. The end caps use a standard 1" hex, so it can be disassembled with a wrench, socket, etc. The threaded end cap on the Kestrel is stainless steel, and if Guardian owners upgrade their baffles, you get new end caps as well, the threaded one being stainless steel.

This picture shows the suppressor without the outer tube. As you can see, the end caps and baffle stack seal together when installed, so no carbon or lead ever reaches the outer tube, making disassembly after even thousands of rounds an easy task.

Here you can see the baffles separated. The baffles and front spacer ring are stainless steel, so clean up can be accomplished with a bead blaster, the "dip" method, or any other ways. Baffles 1 through 5 are identical, so they can be interchanged, which can be useful if the suppressor is used on sustained full auto and erosion of the first baffle occurs. I engraved my baffles with the numbers 1-5, so I can keep track of what baffles I put where. I also engraved the numbers in-line with the machined port on each baffle. This aids reassembly so I can orient the machined ports every 90 degrees. Huntertown Arms recommends this to minimize point of impact shift. I cannot comment if this is vital or not, but is easy enough to do it.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Kestrel 22 for anyone who wants a heavy use .22 suppressor that is easy to take apart, is very reasonably priced, has a lifetime warranty, and is as quiet as any other suppressor out there. And I would highly recommend the Kestrel core upgrade for any current Guardian 22 owners that want to run their suppressor hard. $200 for the upgrade might seem high, but when you consider that you get all new parts, even new end caps, the upgrade from aluminum to stainless steel components, including the mounting threads now being stainless steel instead of aluminum, and the ease of disassembly after even thousands of rounds, its money well spent.

Quick question. Are you buying the stamp for the supressor or for the gun you put it on? I guess I'm asking...can I swap my stamped supressor onto different guns that I own?

You're buying it for the suppressor which is individually serial numbered.
You can put the suppressor on any like calibered weapon, in the case of a .22 suppressor you can put it on a rifle or pistol.
