I have a 617-6 (4", 10-shot) and I screwed up by dry firing it when working with a couple of new shooters. The gun will now not set off rounds when fired in double action (probably 1 in 8 with fire), but will fire most in single action.

I now understand the measure of my screw up. But what do I need to do to resolve the issue? Any help would appreciated. (And additional admonishment will not be appreciated, but will be tolerated as part of my penance)

No real peening on the cylinder face. There might be one tiny mark over one of the chambers, but nothing like the damage I'm seeing in examples on the web.

Nothing under the extractor.

The gun was purchased used, but has run with 99.9% reliability until very recently.

The mainspring screw was not flush with the frame, so it may have backed off some (it was under Hogue grips, so it wasn't visible). I'll tighten it down, and then look at a new firing pin if the screw adjustment doesn't solve the issue.

Thank you everyone for the input!

Try and extended firing pin from Cylinder & Slide. Brownell's carries them.

Hope this solves your problem but the strain screw not being flush is probably the culprit.

Good luck.

Next time load up with dry wall anchors.

Oh...that's slick. But the problem with those is that they don't cost $18.

By the way, I wanted to thank everyone again for the insight and suggestions. I tightened the strain screw back that it is flush with the grip frame and...surprise!...I'm back to getting consistent ignition with the gun.

90% chance the firing pin protrusion is too long, and the tip of the pin has hit the edge of the chamber rim recesses and displaced metal.
The guns with aluminum cylinders are particularly susceptible to this kind of damage.
Never dry fire them.
Not even once.
