Former Glock carriers?

Herr Glock does as Herr Glock wants. No irreverence intended, it is his Company and Patents. I agree I think they're missing the boat w/o a single stack compact 9. But it is what it is, and we drive on.
I am a big fan of Glocks, I had the first one(a 17) in this area, years ago.
Kokalis did a write up on it in SoF, and sold me. Even with the different grip angle, they are all still very good pistols, well engineered, springy trigger and all. And yeah, hell for tough, too. The 2 things I don't like(and even then, it's not a huge problem1), is the grips are too "square" for my arthritic thumbs, and I just do not shoot a Glock trigger with any degree of tight accuracy. "Minute of Bad Guy", sure, but no really tight groups. I know the gun will do it, it's just me on the springy trigger.
Anyway, I did switch off to M&P's more for comfort than any other reason. Still own a 2nd gen G19. And recently a PPQ. Basic Glock trigger set up the way Glock should be. But anyway, both are great pistols and I keep both.

S&W announced months ago that for the most part they are exiting the CA semi-auto pistol market and everything except for the Shield M&P's and SDVE pistols are being allowed to expire from the roster:

"Unless California changes its position, all M&P pistols other than the M&P Shield, will fall off the roster by August, 2014, due to performance enhancements and other improvements we have made to those firearms. This includes the M&P9c, which has fallen off already and several other M&P models that will fall off by the end of this month. Other models already have fallen off and will continue to fall off for the same reason."

Currently only 1 M&P full size model is left on the roster (M&P 9 - Mag Safety SKU 109201), and it expires on 8/16/14.

Don't know about what Glock is doing.

I really like Glocks in concept and execution, however, actually shooting them has me holding onto my steel and alloy framed autos as they shoot so much smoother and point much more naturally.

I can understand the appeal, but they're not for me. I think such guns make ideal military and duty pistols, but I'm sticking to finer things.
 
When I got my CPL, went to the LGS to buy a Glock 26. A friend in my VVA chapter had one, let me handle it, seemed to be what I was looking for. While I was there, I was shown an M&P 9c and that was that. There may be a Glock in my future, but for now, my three M&P's fill the bill.
 
I shot a G19 rental among several other diferent types of pistols before purchasing my M&P.

I just could not get used to the grip angle. The srface of the frame lacked 'bite'. I disliked the plastic guide rod, the plastic sites, and polymer maazines. The lack of a beavertail with a high grip was a problem for me.
 
Agree on the grip angle. This may look hokey, but it works. The gun "for me" does not need a beaver tail. But what it does is changes the grip angle pointing the barrel down where it needs to be. I didn't believe it till I rolled the dice with $8.00. The slip on grip and tail can be had for about $8.00 ea. shipped from the bay. Made a huge difference on mine anyway. Being in Ca. folks tend to keep there older regular capacity guns and find ways to make them better if needed. :D

Micro stamping is such a BS concept.

So what, now everyone at the range has to be hyper vigilant that nobody touches their brass? That's all it'll take is some entrepreneurial scumbag at the range to grab fist fulls of spent brass and go knock over a convenience store and drop some, or sell the fist fulls to criminals to screw up a police investigation.

I mean it's not like criminals ever been known to use revolvers or anything. :rolleyes:

What's the next ban, brass catchers?

Please explain this. If you're of the opinion that these guns are so worthless, why are you here? If you're not a fan of these firearms, fine. I'm not going to try to talk you into it. Please enjoy the rest of the forum and leave us to discuss the guns we enjoy in peace.
 
I've owned a G19, G23, G30SF, G21SF, and a G36...of those, the only gun that fit my hand comfortably was the G36, and it wasn't reliable. I find the M&Ps much more comfortable for me, since I have small hands. I think the Shield is my favorite carry gun.

I do wish there were as many aftermarket parts and accessories for M&Ps as there are for Glocks, though. That's one area where Glock is predominant.
 
I have had glocks for over 20 years. Long before Ben was the Glockmeister on the internet. But with a grandson growing up, I wanted an external safety. Traded my last glock 2 weeks ago for a M&P 45, with the external safety. I think that I had about 10 glocks 6 months ago. Now none. The M&Ps fit me better and I actually shoot them better. And since they are still black, my wife never pays attention to them whatever caliber or size they are.. How many do I have? Less than the amount of glocks that I had 6 months ago. And the same holster fits all but the shield.
Note to self. Always buy the 45 holster for The Holster Works in Tempe. Corey made me one IWB that fits 9mm and 45s.

Those polymer magazines are actually steel underneath. The Gen4 Glocks come with a beaver tail attachment.
 
I have a G26 and a G19. The G26 I will sometimes carry as the primary with a wheelgun back up. All my S&Ws are revolvers and they get carried every day. [edit: have m52 for the range]

I have yet to handle or shoot a Shield. For the foreseeable future my purchases will be wheel guns.

I'll cop to owning one 1911. It is a Kimber that sits in the safe.

So for me ....for now...

revolvers ---- S&W

I've owned MANY Glocks in the past. (17, 22, 23, 27, 20, 30, 34, 35) Since I started shooing the M&Ps, all of the Austrian guns have been sold or traded away. I like the ergonomics of the S&W so much better. My accuracy (and my scores in competition!) confirm this.
The only Glock I'd even consider owning at this point would be a 20SF, since S&W doesn't make an M&P in 10mm.

The magazines are actually metal encased in polymer, and quite quite durable.

Paid for a Glock 30s today. Just to keep the thread alive.
Looking forward to trying the (s) / "slim" 10 shot 45.
About the size of a Glock 19.
So, some folks still buy 'em. :)
 
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Gaston Glock made the world take notice. He built a better mouse trap. Don't get me wrong as I am a S&W fanboy, but they are a stable platform that functions admirably. I am happy that S&W saw this and jumped in with their take on it. If I'm picking between two loaded corvettes, I'm choosing the one that looks better; the M&P.

If S&W made a 10 shot Shield like 45 I would have jumped on it.
But they don't....... So, here we are. :)
 
I just don't get brand loyalty in this day and age when it comes to particular guns. They are all much of a muchness. They are all made and distributed in bulk and prone to bad batches or bad runs.

Where I do understand brand loyalty is in the customer service when something is wrong.
 
I've been through my share of glocks, and unfortunately still have to carry one on duty. I hate it. Not because it's unreliable, it's very reliable in the terms of a combat weapon. It's because the damn thing doesn't fit my hands. I'm a smaller gentleman and the grip is just to fat, the trigger reach is to long (Gen 4's do help a little), and I always have to completely change my grip to reach the mag release. The hump doesn't help my smaller hands either.

It's not about a particular gun. It's more about where we spend our money.

$600 is a lot to most people. So, they want to know that they spent that money wisely. Therefore, they back the particular brand they bought. If they don't, they'll feel as though they didn't spend wisely. Everyone wants to be wise with their money even if in truth we're not.
 
I have 2 Gen 3 Glock 19s that I will never get rid of, but a Shield 9mm and a S&W J Frame (model 38) are what I carry.
Could never warm up to the G26. Didn't like the 2 finger grip and was always getting pinched with the mag extension. Can get 3 fingers on the Shield (small hands). Put a Pachmayr slip on grip to give a little ore thickness and grip.

No doubt, except for me it's the G23 and the Shield 9mm.
 
Now that I have my shield I probably won't got back to Glock.
 
Glock..not reliable? Hmmm. I have nothing against the S&W's, but after all, Glock started it all and seems that the others are trying to keep up. My two Glocks (36 and 21) are probably the best, most dependable guns I have ever owned and I see no reason to try to replace either.
