The 7-shot 686 Mountain Gun is the pinnacle of revolver development. No heavier than a K frame, round butt to allow more flexibility as to grips and concealed carry, stronger than the 6 shot due to offset bolt notches, wide variety of 38 Special and .357 Magnum ammo will do for nearly every purpose apart from large or dangerous game, etc.
It is one of those guns S&W should have put in the line as standard. I sometimes wonder exactly what goes through the minds of the people at S&W who are in charge of such things.
Back when the L frame was introduced with its full lug and the word was that all K frame Magnums were going to be discontinued, I suggest a standard lug version of the L frame to replace the 19/66 and a no lug 681 to replace the 13/65. S&W did not think much of my idea, and apparently they still don't.
Excellent acquisition.
