I have s friend that comes out and shoots now and then. He had this several times and I have shot it a lot. I always liked it and he knew it. He bought him a 1911 45 and offered this to me for 300 with some ammo. You know I jumped on it. Loos new but he has brought it out here for years. Well maintained and in a carrying case. SW40VE is on the slide. I got 9 boxes with one half box 5 special bullets. Close to 300 in ammo alone. I don't have dies for the 40 but will get some. Very happy with this deal, :)

I think you done good! While the 40 is, sort of, falling out of favor, right now, it is a fine cartridge. I still believe that it is everything that the 9mm wishes it was. For all the talk about how much the bullet technology has improved on the 9, the same advances have been made on the 40 (or any other cal. for that matter) so the 40 is still better, at least on paper. Enjoy your new shooter. It is easy to reload for and (mine at least) really likes cast bullets.

I sold my last SW40VE for $150. The ammo makes your deal good.
I told the buyer of mine that the sear had been polished (by me), and the trigger was as good as it was going to get. I also sold him 5 magazines that worked 100% in the gun, and told him which ammo it favored.

Well, I saw him a few months later, and the gun was a jam-o-matic. He had decided to "further improve the trigger", and had got it to where it would not reset with defense ammo. So he sent it to S&W, where they completely replaced the sear assembly, losing the carefully smoothed sear. He had also got his hands on some "bargain" magazines. He had some .40 ammo I never heard of, and it could not get through a magazine without jamming. He said he shot matches for about 3 months with no malfunctions, but then decided he should "improve" the gun and "economize" with cheaper ammo and magazines.

I think you see the point of my post: the SW40VE and SW9VE are good reliable service pistols (I use them for loaners and trainers) but if you don't like them for what they are, swap up to an M&P, IMHO.

I picked up the same just today from my neighbor with 4 mags and 2 holsters for 300. Hes being a tight *** on the ammo though and won't sell the ammo in case he gets another 40.

I used to reload .40 -- gave it up when I sold my last .40 pistol -- but it is an excellent round to reload. Most sources recommend being careful about max loads and watching the OAL, to avoid driving pressure up too high. You always have to watch out for other people's reloads, too! I enjoyed loading them towards the lower limits to get a reliable but soft shooting round.

Your new-to-you SW40VE should work great. The comments on avoiding Bubba Gunsmithing are valid with the SW and SD, as only so much can be done to change them. You cannot turn them into 1911's, but they are reliable and good shooting guns 'as is' and there are a few mods detailed in the forum that can be applied to make them more personalized.
