Herters was popular back in the sixties. They had a store in Iowa back then. A friend bought one of their six shooters in 401.

When I was a boy I lusted after a Herter .401 Power Mag revolver.....actually got to hold one at the Big Timber MT. Gun Show about 10 years ago. Quality made revolver for sure.

The Herters catalog said it was the finest in the world!!

The .401 Herter's Power Mag ... according to the catalog ... the Revolver and Cartridge were the Finest in the World .

I don't think I've ever seen .401 Power Mag brass ...ever ...
could you post a photo of the headstamps .

Being the Herter's fan I am ... a lot of my stuff is from Herter's catalog ...I would have bought them too .
this was 1960's and no internet and dang few shops in town sold reloading and shooting stuff ... Herter's Catalog was the Amazon of the times and mail order was the only way I could get reloading tools .

Acquired a box early 2021 for a project of making 10mm rimmed brass for use in a S&W 610 revolver.

I thought I remember reading that Norma loaded the Herters labeled ammo.

Elmer and his friends toyed with a shortened .401WSL chambered in a Colt SAA a couple of times over. Probably about the same thing.

The Herter Power-Mag revolver was made in W Germany by Sauer.

If I were the person who owned a couple hundred .401 Power Mag cases ... I might just would have to look into this ...

I've bought guns just because I had a set of reloading dies ...
A couple hundred brass cases .... Whoooeeee!!!

I would definitely buy any .401 brass or ammo I came across even without the revolver. I have seen only a very few of the Herter's SA revolvers at gun shows. They were said to have been very well made, also available in .357 and .44, I think. Herter's was located in Waseca MN, add they also operated under the name of Ruhr American. Their catalog was the ultimate wish book, they had everything at cheap prices. Of course, everything they sold was the "World's Finest." I used to buy most of my reloading stuff from them, and still have several die sets. I sort of remember that their primers were made in Japan. I could never keep a Herter's catalog. Someone would always steal them. They were wonderfully entertaining. Those were indeed the good old days.

I may have mentioned this in an earlier posting, but Herter's also had a mail-in gunsmithing service.

An old Ruhr-Amarican catalog offered on eBay:

I was a receiving dealer for Herters. I met ol GLH quitr a few times. He literally talked about te same way his catalog read. Kinda made me think of ol PT Barnum. let me see if I can get all that stuff for the 401 together and I take a few pics. I wanted one of those old Revolvers. They seemed to be well made but I had a first year Ruger 44 mag at the time. I sold Herters skwerl tails and wood duck hides for their fly tying business. And like many here bought lots of Herter's reloading gear and supplies. Think I still have a box or two of their early plastic shotshells. And I do have a box of primers(LR?) in the cabinet. Price was 5 dollars for the 1000

My dad and I were big into Herter's. The catalog was looked forward to more than the Sears Christmas catalog. We had all kinds of Herter's stuff--fishing lure kits, muskrat trap, camping gear. All of it was decent enough quality. But the one thing I wanted but never got was the SA .401 Power mag! I wish I had nabbed a load of the barreled rifle actions too. I still reload on my Herter's Model 3 press and use the Herter's powder dropper.

I have all sorts of Herter's reloading equipment. From a Herter's turret press to dies and even a powder scale. not a bit of it being used.......
