Freight train engineer question

Apologies for the hijack, but once I was at the Idaho State Fair and there was a booth in one of the commercial exhibit buildings for the railroad. I asked one of the engineers, "When you see a car cross the tracks in front of you, do you ever gun it just a little?'

You'd think I'd just made a joke about his mother! Apparently, they take that very seriously, and have no sense of humor about it!
They have to live with the results of hitting those people. My grandfather was an engineer for 52 years and said he lost track of the body count.

As a lad in England, me mum and I would often walk to the railway station with a sack lunch to watch the 'puffer bellies'.

Lovely memories.

In my early teens I would go to the raliway station whenever I could just to watch them.:D

The Diesels don't appeal that much to me.

Guess they only have to control speed and braking. Never saw a steering wheel in a train cab :)

If you believe the newspaper accounts you might think the engines were veering off the tracks left and right in pursuit of pedestrians and cars.

...if you want see what engineers go through...

...seen from someones front porch...

When I lived in Vancouver Washington there was a wreck similar to the one in the video except the semi was hauling a scraper on a lowboy trailer and it high centered on the tracks. Train hit it. Train vs big scraper and the train of course won. Must have been one of the all time THUDS though.
