I would like to change the front sight on my 686 SSR to green fiber optic. I love it on my 1911's, these old eyes need it.
Thanks for your suggestions!

I have the gold bead sight for mine, the fiber optic sights are easier to see but the gold beads are classier and will last longer.

Since it hasn't been specifically mentioned, your 686 SSR is set up with the interchangeable front sight. To change the sight you simply push it against the spring pressure to the rear and lift it front first out of it's nest. IMO it's a very cool system and makes it very easy to change out the front sight.

BTW, I'm also old enough to have issues with my vision and I've tried fibre optics on some of my handguns. Most of my shooting is done at indoor ranges because they are close to my house and I have not found one single fibre optic that is visible at an indoor range, there just isn't enough overhead lighting in the booths. The best post sight I've found is the gold bead patridge sight that came on my 625 JM, that is visible although I can't see the rear sight at all. If you're shooting indoors you'll probably find a fibre optic disappointing, outdoors they are fantastic.

Now, for a sight. S&W offers both red and green fibre optic front sights one their web site in 2 different heights, 0.250 and 0.300 inch. I would suggest that you measure your current sight blade from the top of the mount to the top of the sight. If it's 0.250 inch, order the .250 inch tall fibre optic and order the .300 to match a .300 blade. Following are links to both heights in green.

Thanks for the replies. Scooter - that's just what I was looking for. I'm on it.
I shoot IDPA stuff, only outside and find the green fiber optic easiest for me to pick up.
This gun has become, after about 12 or 13 hundred rounds thru it, unbelievable in accuracy. I also can't believe how the action continues to smooth out and lighten up. I've actually begun to be concerned that it will get to the point it's no longer manageable for me. It's changeing that much.
Thanks again for your replies.
