I like the look of my 17-6 4" so much I have begun the search for a 586 blue 4" 6 shot even though I already have a 19-7. So if I can match up my K frame with an L frame is there an N frame .44 mag blue with out laser engraving on the barrel I can add to my list. As far as that goes how about just listing all the blue full lug smiths you can think of and wile you're at it post some picks.

The only .44 blue that comes to mind is the 29 Classic, and I believe they are all 5" & 6.5" laser engraved. There are a few other stainless models but for blue it's pretty limited.
 
The Blue .44 Mag Mod 29-3, classic hunter is a 6" full lug barrel. I believe these were Lew Horton guns, dating to 1988.

Love those big blue, full lug 29s . . . especially with the unfluted cylinder.

Here's another variation of the 29-5 . . . similar to H. Richard's gorgeous M29, but this one is a -5 version.

It came with the 4-way adjustable front sight (now removed and stored by me for now), and it was NOT called the Classic anywhere on it.

This particular gun was exported to a big German distributor who sells lots of Horton-like guns. Luckily, this one found its way back to the States!

Here she is . . . my wonderful deer-slaying revolver, a 1989 Model 29-5, resting on top of the hide of a rare whitetail piebald buck that I harvested with this incredibly accurate revolver . . .

Personally, I find the weight of a full lugged model K22 too much for my tastes. So I cut the lug back on my 617.

That weight is why I never traded for or bought a 617 and one reason I hated the 647 I had and got rid of this summer. I had never thought about having it cut back, sure makes it better looking gun too. Amazing how the little 22 caliber holes add so to the weight, and feels so different from a 686 that it is really strange.

What is even stranger is I don't feel this difference with my two Dan Wessons, one a 357 and the other a 22 model. The only way to tell the difference in the dark is feel the hole in the barrel.

I just recently sold my 17-6 (with full lug) for the same reason as Old Navy, weight. Great shooting gun, but I also have the 17-4, without the full lug, and it handles for me easier. The barrel of the 17-6 is the same outside diameter ad my 686, but the hole down the barrel is a lot smaller and really adds to the weight. Weight aside they are bot tackdrivers.
 
H R, I have had a friend tell me this on a number of occasions and I guess I was slow on the uptake.

However in my Dan Wesson 22 I don't get the same heavy out front feel of the gun unless I have the 8" barrel on the gun. My guess it is the fact of the free floating barrel and shroud just weights less then the barrel of a 686 does. Must be why I like shoot my two DW's so much more the the new S&W's being sold now.

I just order a S&W model 63 today to use as a plinker and trainer for the grandsons. The 5" partial lug 8 shot, adjustable rear sight, and all steel gun should serve the bill quite nicely.
 
I have thought about sending my full lug 6" 617 to SDM Fabricating to have the barrel cut to 5". It really is way too nose heavy compaired to the 6" 686. I would sure like to hear more about removing the lug though. The picture sure looks great. It might even be a DIY project for winter. Some careful work with a band saw and some files. Should really not be too hard.
 
I have a4" 617, a 6" 617, and a 6" 686, full lugs all. They're all kind of front end heavy but I don't mind because they are also all incredibly accurate.
