Fun with lawyers

Most fun I've had with lawyers, I can't discuss in polite company.

They got pretty girl lawyers now, you know.

I'll admit upon my arrival here at the Forum, I didn't have much use for them and was openly antagonistic of the breed. But at that time I was 6 years into, what turned out to be the worlds ugliest 10 year long inheritence case. I was out multiple ten's of thousands of dollars, as well as out all personal possessions of my Mom and Dad's at the time. And so, not overjoyed with the bar and the antics of some of it's members, whether they were wearing a black bathrobe or not?
I recall Erich astutely observing at the time, after one of my rants, that there were a few he cared for even less than I did!
I've done a 180 on them. But that only applies to the one's here!

The late 70's:

Jimmy's parents lived on a golf course.

Jimmy's parents were on vacation.

Jimmy invites his friends over for a party.

Jimmy's friends were all in their 20's.

Jimmy's friends were/are teachers, bankers, realtors, and lawyers.

Jimmy's lawyer friends decide to go camping.

Jimmy's lawyer friends load up a garden cart with beer, chips, firewood and sleeping bags.

Jimmy's lawyer friends (and 2 others) were found the following morning . . . campfire still burning . . . passed out on the country club's 7th green!

To make matters worse, the foursome who found the late night revelers/campers included an Indiana State Senator!

I wish that I could tell you about the lawyer, the banker, the pontoon boat and the school teachers from Chicago . . . but I'm sworn to secrecy on that one!

There was a local lawyer who took a lot of court appointments as a defense attorney. He took a the case of a young man charged with theft just before the Labor Day weekend. This was not an appointed defense case, but one the client would pay him for. The lawyer went away for the holiday and while away the young man broke into the lawyers house and took electric items to sell to pay the lawyer for his defense !

No big deal. Defense lawyers never ask where the money to pay them came from. Right, CAJ?

BTW, I guess the lawyer didn't get the young man off?

Bob

True story.
I had a case in Superior Court and the DA was questioning a potential female juror:

DA: How are you employed?
Juror: I'm a secretary.
DA: Are you married?
Juror: No, I'm divorced.
DA: What did you husband do before you were divorced?
Juror: Apparently, a lot of things I didn't know about!

Don't have any golf green stories but I did wake up around 11 a.m. in the third base coaches box at old Alex Box stadium in Baton Rouge one time with some girl that I had never seen before-not too bad except at the time I was at law School in New Orleans at Loyola

Tax laws are a prime example. Laws sahould be written in plain everyday english, so I do not have to guess what I am reading.

*The complexity of the tax laws have provided me and my family with a very good life. And the more they "simplify" it, the more complicated that it gets. I look forward to the additional pages to be added by our current government. Everyday English could never express the alien concepts developed to tax you fairly.

Also, why do they charge so much? Because they are the only ones who understand the laws they pass. They got us by the balls and just keep on squeezing them."

*No, when you pay your bill, we stop squeezing. Compared to all other professions our conduct (including billing) is outrageously regulated. And the percentage of lawyers who do charity work/pro bono dwarfs all other professions. Most lawyers make a good, boring living for their families and try to be fair, help people and live honest lives, like any other class of people you only hear about the outrageous cases and bad apples that sell advertising. I for one, do not believe that all military veterans are all shaking drug addicts in grungy cut-off fatigues looking to rob old ladies for their next fix.

If you'd just quit working, you wouldn't have to worry about such mundane things.

Michigan Business Tax (a brand new tax) Due Date is April 30, Texas Margins Tax (A tax in its second year) due date is May 15th, but yes tomorrow is the big one until September 15 - after the post office closes - I can really sleep for the first time since I do not know when.

This is not the first time I'm glad to be legal counsel for a University and not a tax lawyer! Hell, I was in bed by 10:00 last night!!! Rick -- Hope the post offices close early for you today.

I'm afraid my view of lawyers was badly colored when the defense attorney representing a ( )
who had shot and killed five members of his own family as well as two peace officers (one of whom I counted as a friend) chose a defense tactic called "Trying the victim(s)". Had there been a legal way to manage it, I would gladly have paid to execute the SOB and his attorney. Glen left behind a wife and young daughter. The defendent dodged the death penalty, due primarily to the attorney's pro bono antics.

ATTORNEY: Do you know if your daughter has ever been involved in voodoo?
WITNESS: We both do.
ATTORNEY: Voodoo?
WITNESS: We do.
ATTORNEY: You do?
WITNESS: Yes, voodoo.

I just spit up some of that milk I was drinkin' with those cookies ... that's funny.

A great pity about Huber, Martinez and the others, but I suggest that your emotions have caused you to think irrationally toward the attorney. He ethically did his job in this case, and no authority has ever suggested otherwise to my knowledge. Gary has time and again earned the enmity of LEOs whom I know for his willingness to take the cases of accused cop-killers, and here's why I don't think that's fair.

I would note that the willingness of attorneys to represent unpopular clients zealously ensures that we ALL get due process of law. Let us hope that none of us are ever in a position to require such zealous representation on our own behalf.

Bingo.

Regardless of how slimy or sleazy or even guilty, in our system, ALL are entitled to due process of law. Without such, we're just a lawless lynch mob.

I sure don't understand the attitude of all of our good, conscientious attorneys here on the forum. Looks like they all got their taxes paid on time which will totally remove them from any possibility of filling one of the nineteen cabinet positions Obama has left.
