Future retirement location?

Charlie let's split the difference and move to St. Tammany Parish. ;)
Gary

I was there yesterday. Gun Club swap meet, Phil's Marina Cafe, Rouse's, Aquistapace's (SP?) Discount liquor. Did the River Rd. plantation tour (my own car, not a tourist bus) with my daughter and grand daughter a few days ago. Ran out of time at Houmas House. Going back for that one. The only thing that depressed me was the price of crawfish.

Don’t go to a quaint little farming town out in the country no matter how much you think you would love living there. Consider infrastructure, small towns and rural areas do not have roads and water and sewer systems to handle large influx of people. Grocery stores and medical facilities are the size to accommodate the rural population so large influx of people who demand more than small rural areas can deliver is a huge problem. Also culturally there will be conflict such as residents of a gated community who petitioned the county commissioners to prohibit a land owner who owns property along the road leading to town from cutting his timber because it will spoil their view as the drive back and forth. Ask me how I know this?

Also large gated developments put in private sewer systems not always managed and operated properly. And in a lot of areas the streams and rivers are small and don’t have the water flow to accommodate huge sewer system discharge, the rivers become sewers. There is a reason big cities are located around big rivers..

I've been planning a move to Arizona for retirement for almost 20 years. I'm a sun worshipper and anything below 75 degrees is too cold. I've been out there with the temps in the mid 100's so I think I can handle summers.

Retired last year and put my house in Maine under contract yesterday. If nothing goes wrong we will close on 3/26 then it's off to Arizona, hopefully landing there around 4/1. Looking to buy in the Benson, St David area.

We've watched Maine go steadily downhill the last 20 years or so from the influx of people "from away", and I can see that AZ has a troubled future politically but we will bring our conservative values with us.

Long term plan finally coming to fruition!

I've lived in the great state of Tennessee all of my life. My sister and her husband, upon retirement, moved from TN to AZ they love it but, I can't see much of a reason to leave TN, when the time to retire comes.

If I had to or wanted to relocate, I would consider TX but, anywhere else would be a stretch. TN has no state income tax, is a conservative state, for the most part and has favorable firearm laws.

Come over for a gander, you might just find it likable.

Looked up Benson, interesting spot. Little close too the border for my tastes, although being handy for I-10 is a plus. The climate looks similar to Vegas. How are you fixed for medical facilities in that town? I see that Tuscon is over 40 miles away.

Lots of people are still moving to Vegas. No income tax and relatively low property taxes are the attractions. Those with children who didn't research sufficiently find themselves bit in the butt by the poor performance of the school system. Teacher turnover is massive, with many leaving the trade because they cannot pay their bills due to skyrocketing housing costs and the low salaries. Many that move here also get a rude shock by the costs of car registration and insurance.

Trouble is, when we think of where else to go, the issues of those other locations become apparent. Weather is s big one. We are not doing cold and/or tornadoes. My wife previously lived in the Dallas area, and she's done with tornadoes. We have family in Texas, and while the area towards San Antonio has some attraction weather wise, the water situation in Texas is nearly as dodgy as ours here in NV. We don't want to do somewhere with lots of humidity and the possibility of hurricanes, either. Many places in Texas also have eye-watering property taxes compared to what we have here. Maybe that would be offset by cheaper car registration and insurance, and maybe not. Gun laws are another "no sale" issue in many states.

Benson has it's own hospital, grocery store, Walmart, hardware store, restaurants, a gun shop and Tucson is just about a half hour down I10. Where we are here in Maine the local hospital is about 15 minutes away. To go to the bigger hospitals for specialized treatment and things they can't handle locally, means about 1:45 minutes driving each way.
Proximity to Tucson is one of the things we like about Benson.

My son just moved to TN from TX. Bought on house in Winchester by Tim Fords lake. So far so good.

It cracks me up how people are so worried about tornadoes. I've lived in OK for 50 years and I think the statistical chances of being hurt or killed by one is similar to being struck by lightning or attacked by a Grizzly bear. I do have a steel safe room and full coverage insurance so IF something happened to my house and possessions I would get almost double what they're worth. Any time there's a tornado in the area I'm rooting for it to hit my house:)

When doing insurance, make sure you understand the difference between Replacement Cost Value (RCV) and Actual Cash Value (ACV). Premiums differ as does what is paid for any claims.

I was looking at a town called Payson in AZ.
Ran out of time for a trip there when I was at last years Symposium in Glendale.
However, based on FBI crime data, Payson is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to Arizona, Payson has a crime rate that is higher than 78% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes.
Statistics are a funny thing, so does anybody have any real world experience or opinion?

I'm kind of surprised no one's mentioned SW Missouri. Springfield/Joplin area has great medical care and lots of trees. MO's gun laws are essentially non existent. Outside of Kansas City, St. Louis and Columbia metropolitan areas it's solidly red. Same lousy weather as eastern OK.

Not Louisiana :D
We are second in the nation in people moving out-followed by New York state.

Both my kids left. They ain't coming back...... I've been running around the swamps here my whole life. It would be hard to leave, but I fully understand people that do.
