Gen 3’s are Coming back !

Not saying it won't happen but

If this story is true (and that's a big IF...), those of us who know and love 3rd Gens would have only ourselves to blame. Many times my friends who all seem to have striker-fired plastic pistols have fired any of my 3rd Gens and have quickly fallen in love. For many who grew up on nothing but strikers and polymer, the difference - and the experience - can be, ahem, striking (pardon the pun...).

Every so often the latest generation always seems to rediscover the "What's Old Is New Again" concept as well. This probably explains why when I shave with a blade I use a safety razor. I can see plenty of reasons why a manufacturer would want to take advantage of that sentiment, and all of them involve a healthy profit motive! :D

I've gone through my share of 3rd gens in the last 2 years. What I have left are what I like best. 3914NL, 3914DAO, 5946 NYPD, 4006TSW CHP, 4013TSW, 4043, 4516-1, and a 469 just because.

I'm sorry, I just don't see this happening. I was surprised to see the metal framed CSX come out.

I think that pricing to make it worth S&W's ROE would be cost prohibitive.

And besides relics like us, who would buy the new 3rd gens?

If they do come out with new 3rd Gens I'd expect a lot of complaining about the price by people who expect them to be priced like they were in the 80s.

Factoring for inflation, the price will probably be equivalent.

That's assuming it's true, which I'm highly skeptical of.

IF it's true, it gives the millions of new gun owners who bought plastic something to move up to. I can see the reasoning, but they'd have to be "Gen 4" designs if there's anything to improve or streamline.

Maybe the frames are made by cheap offshore labor, or in Europe where the exchange rate has taken a dive.

Got it from reliable source. Starting with 59 series and then 45 series. My dealer got it from Smith. Not sure when the flow will start. Also not sure if they will be TSW versions which were the last versions made. Stay tuned.

It's a little early for April fools day isn't it??

:D

edit... I guess Jim got to this conclusion first...

I too am very skeptical, but Smith did in fact just release a metal frame M&P with a price point of $900...Not sure how that one is selling but they had to think there was a market for it.

I just bought one of those, and like it very much. If they'd make one without the dust cover rail and red dot slide cut, I'd buy another one. :) Not holding my breath though.

If the news is true, then 6906 mags would be on back order for 2 years as soon as they got released.

Would be happy to see just the CS series brought back maybe in 380-9mm and 45. Betting they would move pretty well!

A new CS9 would be fabulous. I have my fill of full size guns, and my 6946 is still too big for me to carry. My 3953 TSW is close enough to the CS9, but every ounce and inch matters for me and carry.

I hope they bring them back, I'd be a buyer. Same Gen 3 guns, with a little increase in mag capacity would be nirvana.

If this is the real deal, I can see a majority of my polymer framed guns being replaced by new models of the 3rd Gen. guns in .45 and 9mm. I've been picking up 3913s and 6906s over the last couple of years, collecting parts and rebuilding them. I hope to see a new 5906, 3906, 4566, 4516 and 4506, as well as anything else they can come up with. As someone said above, I'd really like a TDA model of the CSX. I think they'd sell well.

The 6906 in the photo below just had the frame refinished in Ceracoat by Wright Armory in Mesa Arizona. They do outstanding work. I highly recommend them.

Lets assume that S&W are about to introduce a line of metal guns covering the Gen 3 line. Given the complexity and well know design funnies of the Gen 3 guns, I would bet S&W will produce something that looks mostly like a Gen 3, uses some Gen 3 parts (why reinvent the wheel), but in certain ways is definitely NOT a Gen 3. The way the barrel locks up on a Gen 3 and the frame machining it requires would likely go away for a simpler system, IMHO. Of course, the modern CNC manufacturing methods may prove me wrong.

If S&W is serious about renewing the 3rd Gen line of pistols (whether all steel or some with aluminum frames), they should start small initially and focus on producing one DA/SA model in the more concealable size in the various caliber lines.

So in 45acp, maybe that would be the 4566 or 4516 or 4513; in 10mm, the 1066; in 9mm, the 6906 or 3913; in .40S&W, the 4013 (single-stack) or 4013TSW (double stack).
