Gen 3’s are Coming back !

The Turkish made 1911s, CZ-75s, and Browning HP's are all pretty nice guns at a great price. Why couldn't S&W get them lined up to make some of their classic autoloaders?

My guess would be :

1) the tooling is probably long gone

2) trademark issues.

3) demand. Sure, we all drool like Pavlov's dogs at the though of new 3rd gens. But how many others would be interested.

Beside, according to post 166, it's not happening anyway.

I'm on another forum with Massad Ayoob. Due to this discussion he contacted Smith & Wesson. Short answer: "not happening".

I know I want to believe Mass. On the other hand, here's S&W in January 1951 saying there will be no Combat Magnum . . . then saying there IS a Combat Magnum, in, wait for it, November 1951.

So at least in 1951 it depended on who was asking, and who was being asked :-)

Way back in post #33, I expressed grave doubts. We used 3rd gen duty guns and replaced them with the M&P 1.0. It's hard to describe the depth of advantage having only one variety of trigger press all the time. The CZ and several other lines maintain their sales in large part to those who play gun games and take advantage of the ability to be cocked & locked.

And, it appears that the choice of metal frame striker fired guns is increasing. Best of both worlds?

After reading about the issues some are having with the M&P chambered in 10mm Auto, maybe S&W should bring back the 10xx series pistols. It is a proven design and was built to withstand more full power ammo than an owner would likely ever shoot.

Well I see S&W bringing out the M&P9 Metal so losing hope. Small article in the Guns&Ammo January issue. Quotes a price of $899.

I remember Cabela's had some brand new 5946 a few years back and I think they were in the $600-$700 range and they were made in Houlton, ME.
I think the story was they were over runs for the NYPD as that gun was still on their approved list for officers to purchase and apparently enough bought them to make it worth S&W's while.

I think if they price them right, they will sell.

I doubt many would pay close to $800 for a new manufactured 3rd Gen when they could purchase the same model on the used market for much much less.

However, if this is true it could mean that new parts will be readily available!
