I like many here am retired LEO. I went to my local courthouse to get a permit, since I always just kept my badge and ID with me when I was active duty. I had no idea the law in GA had changed concerning retired LEO. It is literally easier for a civilian to get a carry permit than a retired LEO. I still have a badge and current ID, which I carry with me, but what I would have to go through to get a permit, I figured I would just keep my ID with me and chance getting some rookie wanting to make a "big bust" and locking me up for not having a permit.
The rules were always crazy here anyway; we were always required to carry, on or off, but getting a permit was optional? And when the law changed a few years ago, it was called a "weapons permit" with no clarification as to concealed or open. Then they added a clause that a LEO couldn't ask if you had a permit?? I threw up my hands. Every time I saw someone open carry I ignored it. Stupid, but ignored.
While I think Kemp is doing this for political points, I have to say "Thank you!" If someone is carrying, does something stupid, and gets caught as an ex-con, then they go to jail. If you're legal to own it you're legal to carry it. Finally people are waking up. Law abiding citizens shouldn't have to have permission to exercise a right.
As to assault weapons; never, ever had an encounter with a legal citizen having one and using it illegally. Always bad guys that couldn't own it in the first place. A 10-22 is an "assault rifle"?? Well ****, so is Will Smiths right hook.
