Looking for additional info from "our" experts!?

1972 Model 66 No Dash Stainless Sites - Standard Hammer and Trigger (updated per info).

Came with Target Stocks (not numbered to gun) as pictured.

However seller also found/had "original" Football Stocks came with/in the box) also pictured.

Did early 66s also come with (in this era/year) Football Stocks from S&W originally?

On the back of the Football Stocks # ...357, which matches last 3 of gun serial # > coincidence or?

I sold a 1974 Model 66 No Dash Stainless Sites that came with Target stocks.

Trying to get a handle on what's what with the Stocks seller has...

Thank you for the input. Best, Dave

Your Model 66 would have shipped with stocks like those on the Model 66 shown below. Also, your Model 66 has a standard hammer and trigger. The one shown below has a target hammer and standard trigger. Target stocks (with a few exceptions) were not numbered to the revolver. Click on the photo for a better look.

My 66 "no dash" from 73 came with football cutout target stocks.
Standard trigger and hammer. I have owned it since new, the only change is a black w/o sight blade.

Thanks for the clarification re Hammer, Trigger and Stocks.

SS336: Does your stocks have any part of the serial number on the inside?

SEE picture (RT Stock shows solder repair to inside of the medallion.)

I think KT-357 is stamped on the inside of the stock panels you have. KT-357 is the factory or plant designation for the .357 Combat Magnum and was stamped on stock panels to indicate they were made of Goncalo alves and not walnut which were sometimes stamped KT-38. The stamping has no relation to the serial number of the revolver. The other number (or part of it) is the part number of the stock panel.

Thank you Doc, for info on the Stocks.

This example does have Serial #'d Box + Papers + Bagged Tool Kit. High Condition and no issues with exception of the soldered emblem RT grip panel.

What do you all think the value is? IMO 66s are all over the place. Seller started so "high" $ the only person who would speak to him was Snoop Dog.

Wondering what current fair $ range is?

I own a few 66's. I sold my son's 66 no dash a little over a week ago. 4" barrel, target grips and original box serial numbered to gun. Gun in excellent condition, grips not so much so, and box a little ratty. Sold for
$ 750. Does this 66 come with both sets of grips? That would be a real plus. I think $ 800 would be a good starting point and be willing to go higher.

Your "no dash" Model 66 would have come with "football cutout" target stocks - either checkered or smooth "presentation" types.

The "speedloader" cutout stocks were introduced in the 1983-1992 time period. I personally consider them rather ugly and unbalanced; my preference for appearance are the "football" stocks, and I was sorry to see the changeover to the speedloader versions.

Here's my Model 66-1 from 1978. It's pictured with period correct "football cutout" presentation stocks.

The K frame target stocks with the speedloader cut actually appeared in the late 1970s (1978-79). They did not take over completely for a couple years as older stock was used up, but they were available. The N frame version came a little bit later - early 1980s.

This Model 14-4 shipped from Springfield on July 21, 1980, to Kamloops, Inc., in Boise, Idaho. I bought it brand new in the condition shown. It wears its original target stocks with the speedloader cut. These, of course, are walnut. The Model 66 would have had GA.

With thanks!

The forum always the best re info needed on anything S&W. Appreciate everyone's assistance.

The Bad are Football Stocks not original to the gun-repair on RT side, if that paperwork and unopened tool kit came with originally and the WAY HIGH price.

The Good is nice condition and #d box.

Seller got "a lot" of Stocks, Holsters, and this Wheel Gun all together. Who really knows what was cobbled together with the gun and box? I'm out on this example. Too bad cause it coulda been shipped C&R to F'D up CA.

Best, Dave

KT stocks made of walnut (KT-WAL) and goncalo alves (KT-357) showing stamping on underside of each panel, 1969-1973. The part number is also stamped on each panel. I remembered incorrectly as it is N-frame stocks made of walnut that are stamped NT-38. Not that many stocks were stamped this way, but I have several examples in my collection. Click on the photos for a better look.
