I picked up a 1905 the other day in the 556k range (about 1927-1930 according to the catalog), is it worth the $30.00 to get a letter from S&W on?

I would.

If you value the history in your revolver, where it went from S&W, get a letter.

Besides, maybe it shipped to an individual or LEO.

Maybe it shipped to a big city department store or a mom and pop hardware store on the corner.

You'll never know if you don't get a letter.

I would get the letter if it were my gun. We S&W collectors have it pretty good right now, when it comes to factory letters. They are the cheapest available from any gun maker, and/or research sevice. How long that will last, who knows, but it could end anytime. In fact, the only reason it still is possible to get a letter is that the service is a small profit center for the company, and right now S&W need all the profit centers it can find. Jinks says the minute the bean counters compute the letter service as an expense rather than a revenue, letters will be history, and I believe him. We collectors can suport the letter program by sending for letters on as many guns as we can afford, to keep the program in the black. It's better to have a few letters more than we really need, than none at all. Just my humble opinion. Ed.
