Getting good coffee from Keurig

My wife entered some contest a few years ago and won a FREE Kuerig. So, she entered the contest again.... and won another one... and another.... and another. After five is said, "Stop". We gave them away to friends and family. Kept one, which my wife still uses.

I use a Black & Decker single serve coffee maker. It's great. (This one particular inexpensive coffee maker has like it's own cult following on the internet). Takes cute little single serve disposable filters - Melitta brand paper cones (fancy). Buy them on Amazon by the gross. That way they end up costing about 4 cents each. Then I get my coffee at SAMS. Their espresso roast store brand which I grind from beans on their in-store grinder at a setting between FINE and ESPRESSO. Basically, it comes out a fine powder. Like flour.

I can make a strong, rich, totally awesome cup of coffee for less than 20 cents. One 16 oz. cup of really good coffee is all I ever drink. But, I've gotta have it. Everyday. I lay in bed in the morning thinking how great that cup of coffee will taste. Then I'm done. Zero interest in coffee for precisely the next 24 hours. When again my world revolves around one cup of really good coffee. Weird.

I have drunk Kuerig coffee at my FFL. The medium blend seemed just fine to me. All I can say is that those that want it stronger than the strong blend he tried to feed me are in for some serious heart disease in the future. I swear that stuff would jack you higher than crack.

Google "Freedom Clip". One of the people that is suing Keurig, made it and it clips right over a hole in the top head of a 2.0. Everyone's K-Cup will work then..:)

EDIT: What I like about the 2.0, vs my older one, is that there's a "strong" setting which made my normal K-cups taste even better! It pulsates the water over the coffee. The more time water is on the coffee the better. Takes about 20 seconds longer than normal to make...

Thanks for all the comments!

For all who said they bought re-usable k-cups that they put their own coffee in, I don't get it. The Keurig is about convenience to me. If I'm going to handle my own coffee, I'd just as soon put it in my Mr. Coffee.

On water . . . I asked my son what they do at his work with the Keurig coffee not being hot. He said that they put hot water in it to start. I tried that, and it works great. For those who suggest special water, seems to me that too will kill convenience.

As suggested, I got some Starbucks (French?) Dark Roast to try. You guys are right, it is not weak. I don't care for the taste, but it solves the weak problem. I'm hoping Starbucks has conquered weak, and I'm going to see if they have something more like my sacred Colombian.

I tried the Community Coffee Dark Roast, and it is only slightly weak. But I don't like the taste.

At this point, best I have found - for me - is Walmart brand Colombian, brewed strong. Not as good as my Mr. Coffee, but getting pretty close. And cheaper K-cups than the other guys, under $5 for 12 K-cups. I use two to make a cup, so about 83 cents per cup. Pricey, but I'm good for it.

Thanks again for the help!

I'm a bit late to this thread, but both my wife and I like strong, robust coffee and we are very happy with our Keurig. We even bought a separate small Keurig machine to take with us when we travel so that we don't have to rely upon the crappy in-room machines most motels offer.

The key is to buy the RIGHT K-cups. We use only two types: Tulley's French Roast, and 8 O'Clock Italian Roast. Both are strong, excellent coffees. In fact, we go through 3 boxes of 24 of each type each month. Expensive, yes, but worth it for good morning coffee. I get them directly from Keurig, which includes free shipping.

To me, coffee that sits in the pot gets to taste old and burnt fairly quickly. That's why the Keurig is so good: every cup is freshly brewed. I would hope that I never need to go back to old fashioned drip or percolated coffee makers.

The coffee is weak because it pushes the water threw too fast, if you want a one cup coffee maker, buy the Black & Decker brew and go and it comes with a travel mug.

Mrs. Lakesider is a coffee bug, almost as bad as the petty officers I saw in the Navy. She makes her own pots a few times a day, I might have 2 cups, and she will have 22. I do not know what she does as I stay out of her space there but the coffee is good.

My only experiences with Keurig is at car dealerships in the waiting area. I prefer to drop my vehicles and wait, so I hit the coffee pots at 3 different dealerships with each havinga3-4 flavors/strengths coffee available. To be totally honest I have not found any I really like. I drink black coffee, no diluting it with addons and so I can get the TRUE taste. Pardon the pun but that coffee (so far at least) is not my cup of tea.

Most Keurig drinkers, it seems, like weak to moderate strength coffee. Try the Tully French Roast black. I doubt that you will find it too weak or not a really good cup of coffee.

I think it's pretty funny that some of us complain about a .70 to .80 cent cup of coffee is expensive. I'd like to hear from forum members who stop at Starbucks every morning for their "fix". Plain old coffee there costs over $2.50 a cup. Get the fancy stuff and you can double that price. looking at it that way, you daily coffee at .80 cents is a bargain.

Don't forget the "Gun Show" coffee for $3.00 per cup! I'd really hate to face that every morning. :p
