Gin preferences

Sapphire or Citadelle for martinis (I take mine on the rocks with one olive, and a bottle of vermouth somewhere in the room).

For mixed drinks, Booths (also drinkable on the rocks). I'm not gonna spend Sapphire money and cover up the taste with tonic.

Gin and tonic takes a splash of bitters ( I probably got that from reading Ruark as a kid, or else Kipling).

Gin for bloody Marys and Caesars.

Vodka: Stoli or Russkiy Standart, straight up and frozen, in a frozen glass, with ikkrah or herring. There is no such thing as a vodka martini.

I spent years drinking Blue Sapphire or Tanqueray with tonic before I realized a lesser quality gin would suffice. Now that I'm retired, I'm happy to pour New Amsterdam for my G&T.

Martini-Boodles. W/tonic-Seagrams Lime Twisted.

I had almost forgotten that place. It was 20+ years ago ...

Actually good memories. Thanks!

Yes, I got to Egypt several times back in those days when I was plowing the fields for business throughout the middle east. I was exposed to a hepatitis outbreak there my last trip, and as soon as I got home a few days later I had to get the Gamma Globulin treatment. Either I wasn't exposed enough or the GG worked, as I was OK. Unfortunately, at least then, sanitation was severely lacking in that part of the world. Probably still is.

When I was in the Navy, my last duty station was Fighter Squadron 11 (VF 11). The squadron was first commissioned in 1927 and has been in continuous commission ever since, AFAIK. The squadron tail emblem was the yellow pig from the Gordon's gin bottle. Used with permission, of course. For nastalgia's sake, I usually buy Gordon's.

Once you love one brand, it is very hard to switch. You can like a variety of great bourbons or Scotch, but you stay loyal to whatever gin that you prefer.

If you go to a bar and request your favorite gin, you'll know if they give you a fake faster than almost any other spirit.

Hendrick's is great quality, but it is not ( and does not pretend to be) London dry gin.

I have not drank gin since 1967. I was 19 year old. I was traveling to my duty station. I met a older more experienced Sgt. he was a gin drinker, Beefeater's. he convinced me to fill my canteen with gin and sip it as we traveled. We got to our duty station, I was hammered, he was sober as a judge. I was almost sent back to the main base . Have not touched Gin since or drank while traveling. To say I was sick was and understatement.

Several years ago I was "taught " to drink Bombay Sapphire Gin by Captain Dick Marcinko while doing some training.
It is still my most favorite Gin.

I remember reading his books and in every one he mentioned Bombay Sapphire. When I reached drinking age, it was one of my first ones and still my favorite gin. Beefeater's is great too.

Of course, if money is tight or I have company I break out the old American standard, Seagrams Dry Gin. Or Bumpy Face as we call it down here. I like Gordon's too but refuse to drink liquor from a plastic bottle.

I like my Gin with a little Vodka. Makes a smooth extra dry martini. Gordon works for both flavors as far as I'm concerned.

If we're going to buy gin, my wife and I usually get Broker's. Very good and not too pricey.

I've been a Tanquery fan for many years. A GF talked me into trying Bombay Sapphire. It was decent. But then I did a back to back test, comparing Tanq and BS. The Tanquery was vastly superior. If you drink the Bombay Sapphire by itself, it's not bad.

Gotta try some of the Hendricks.

Well thanks to you all raving about different gins, I found myself in a Spec's store up in the DFW area and found a bottle of Boodle's and a bottle of Hendrick's.

Not bad at all but I must admit Tanquery is still my favorite.

So I have three bottles, that will probably last a very long time. - Or not;).
