Gin, the civilized drink

The palate of Hat Trick Botanical Gin is rich and full bodied. Dry touch of juniper at first, then creamy vanilla and lemon, earthy mid notes, spearmint leads off the finish, bright and strong. A hint of that floral/jam note, intimates hibiscus and fresh fruit, but not quite altogether distinct. Lingering orange rind, angelica, and rosemary- long and smooth.'

Wah wah wah wah wah..... How 'bout just sayin' it tastes good...I like it
Some guy tried that with me on scotch one time. I stopped him and said that as far as scotch goes, I like peaty and smoky cross your eyes constrict your throat scotch-like Ardbeg Uigeadail or Laphroig. When I'm drinking that most people will not share it with me. Kinda like when I'm duck hunting-I shoot a 20 so nobody can borrow shells :D

Well without stating which UK university and what year, around Xmas time we used to set up a Soxhlet extractor with juniper berries (and other "fruits") and distill 95% ethanol (checked to make certain no "Avgas" in it to denature it) for a few hours. Then cut 50:50 with conductivity water (have to go back to your chemistry textbooks for that one). Excellent tasting "gin". Similar operations with apples produced a reasonable facsimile of Calvados and "young ladies of our acquaintance used to nibble on the apple slices". I shall not describe the effects but leave to the imaginations of you "DOMs" Amazing how an organic chemistry degree can lead one astray....Dave_n

Ah bathtub gin----at around 7th grade a nun
related how she and her family had a neighbor
who was concocting bathtub gin during
Prohibition. She laughed how that was her
first sniff at hard alcohol.

I'm mostly a wino, but this thread inspired me to order a large G&T at the movies to get me through the possible train-wreck of the latest M. Knight Shyamalan flick.

It was delicious, and the movie was pretty good, too.

Gonna make some at home tonight.

I used to drink cheap box wine but since his thread I've switched to Gin and tonics. Way fewer calories and I like the taste. I started with Beefeaters then tried Seagrams and couldn't tell the difference so I'll stick with the cheap stuff.

I plan to have a nice big g&t while enjoying today's highbrow movie at the theater.

Way back in time when I was a teenager I drank a pint of Gin straight out of the bottle. In a short amount of time.
I don't ever recall any other time I got that sick from drinking. And I have gotten that drunk, or more so, many times. I have never been able to drink Gin since.

Mirrors my experience after The Great Tequila Incident.

There are so many flavor profiles - a friend took us to an astonishing gin place in London about a year ago. Mr Fogg's Gin Parlour | Covent Garden
Generally around the house, we really like The Botanist. We keep Beefeater as a mixer and always have Sapphire and usually Hendrick's for those who like it. I like 47 Monkeys but . . . not always. And Leopold's from CO is good for those who want to buy kinda local.

Probably true considering GB's once far flung empire had many places in malaria infested tropics. Tonic water contains quinine, probably more in Churchill's pre-FDA time than now; no doubt an excuse to issue it army officers and government poohbahs to prevent malaria.

G&T has for some time been my only alcoholic drink indulgence. But only with a dash of grenadine added, just enough to give it a pinkish tint. Long ago, I spent several months in Cairo on a job, and found that combination was popular there. It had a name used by the locals, but I don't remember what it was. My favorite gin label is Fleischmann's which, fortunately, is also one of the least expensive brands.

Almost made it to my other favorite: Singapore Sling.

Gin
Grenadine
Sweet & Sour Mix
Club Soda

Add ice cubes

Top off with Herring Cherry Liqueur.

No need to stir. The Herring is dense, and will mix itself in.

I never acquired a taste for alcohol.
It all tastes bad to me.
I figure any food or drink that one has to force themselves to like the taste of is probably bad for you.
A glass of sweetened ice tea ( even instant ) tastes better to me than any alcoholic drink ( except a Margarita about 4 times a year ),

I forget whether it was in "Delirious", or more likely "Raw", that Eddie Murphy asked "How many of you took your first taste of gin and said My, that is delicious?"

My son said it tasted like licking the gasoline nozzle.
