Gin, the civilized drink

Agree. Had an 'experience' with T&T's while in college that rendered me unable to even smell gin for about 30 years. I can now responsibly enjoy one or two, but all things considered, I learned my lesson well.

Same here except it was High School days. I don't recall what gin it was, but we drank Gin and Squirt. To this day I can't even think about drinking the stuff (Gin, that is. I can still drink Squirt....go figure). I too, shall stick to my Bourbon!

I like gin, especially in martinis, though an occasional G&T is welcome, too. I don't make martinis at home, probably out of fear that I would keel over shortly as they are easy to over imbibe if you're not hearing the cash register going ka-ching! in the back of your mind.

Interestingly, considering the clearly well-informed comment above, among the regularly available gins, I prefer Bombay Sapphire as Tanqueray tastes too tasteless to me. Still, much better than Hendricks which I find lacks any bite at all.

But, my all time favorite, which I had read about but never tried, until I serendipitously encountered it at a steak dinner in San Francisco several years ago, is Old Raj. Now that is a seriously good gin!

I like a gimlet, too, in summer, but have not had one in years.

(My staple, though, is rye which, eccentric that I am, I drink with hot water in a double walled Turkish coffee glass.)

While my first choice is whisky-I do love the white liquors. Margaritas (rocks not frozen) rum-with tonic and gin (Hendriks) with tonic or dirty in a 'tini. as far as G&T's I like them pink (first read about them in Ruark's books) and by pink I mean angostura NOT peychauds!!

My Dad's brother was a cardiologist of some renown and taught me to drink martinis, smoke cigars, and hunt whitetail deer. Everyone should have an uncle like him.

He once told me martinis taste like Aqua Velva smells. You probably have to be my age or better to even know about Aqua Velva after-shave (even though it is still on the shelves in a few places). Objectively, there is a strong olfactory relationship between gin and Aqua Velva.

Gin always seemed like more of a drug than a kind of liquor. My party days are behind me, thankfully, but every now and then, when conditions are just right, a martini finds its way to my lips. Partial to New Amsterdam gin but Beefeater is a standard. Most any brand of Jenever from Holland is pretty interesting too.

After a evening with a couple of buddies and a couple of bottles of Sloe gin and the resulting barfing and hangover I stay from Gin period. I'm even told that Sloe gin is not gin.

I used to drink Tanqueray with cranberry. Very few occasions now will I drink anything stronger than Light Beer, with Bud Light leading the way. I'll have a few tastes of Yukon Jack from the freezer over the winter months, but it's not something I'd want to over do; too sweet.
I've had some gin from the freezer, too, but it's gotta be a decent brand.

When I become lord and master of the world, alcohol in any form will be banned and consumption of alcohol in any form will result in a swift and immediate public hanging.

I drink what W. Churchill drank...........
Boodles Gin, with an stuffed olive.
With a lemon twist, I pour a chilled, Belvedere.

Vodka is ok now and then and I like
Hendrick's best and with a lemon twist, i like USA's, Tito's.

I have found Boodles to be the best martini, but a well made Tanqueray Ten goes down well, now and then.

Boodles! My wife and I did a double-blind taste testing of several gins a number of years ago and Boodles was the clear winner, followed closely by Beefeater. Our state liquor stores dropped Boodles a few years ago, so now it's Beefeaters - G&Ts in the summer, martinis (not too dry) in the winter. Cocktails are served promptly at 5 PM.

In the early evening, after chores are done, I come in from the barn and pour myself a glass of whiskey or a G&T to relax before dinner. I'm not real picky with brands. Beefeater or Amsterdam works for me. Bombay Sapphire is my idea of high end hooch when I'm feeling rich, or when guests are expected.

I don't drink liquor often. I do enjoy Basil Hayden for bourbon or sometimes Balvenie Scotch.

Every once in a while a get in the mood for gin, so I keep a bottle of Bombay Sapphire around. It makes me feel like I'm sitting on the Busted Flush.
