Givers & Takers

My motto is "Me first!" Family comes next and then neighbors who I've known for years and are in need. That's the way this country was formed.Charity is best served on the local level.Otherwise it never gets to the people that need it.

I am very skeptical about giving money to sign carriers on the street. There are plenty of shelters or organizations around to assist these people if they really wanted help and not just a handout.

I also don't pay any attention to commercials nor to the Hollywood multi-millionaires that plead for our dollars.

As a former officer in the Salvation Army I know a lot about giving and taking. My outlook has changed over the years. I still know that I have an obligation to God and his children. What has changed is now I will freely give but I will not enable someone that will not take responsibility for his/her own actions.

Well thought out and well put sir.

Ditto.

I consider myself a giver, even a cheerful giver. I believe, in many cases, to give until it hurts and then give some more. But, there is a difference between giving a hand up and a hand out that seems to have no end.

I was taught a valuable lesson by my late Aunt Marjorie... she once gave a lot of money to her church for a special project... it never got done... they had "other things" come up... the next time they asked... she had them send the bill directly to her... she would pay for it when it was done... and not before... they lost the "right" to a direct donation... if they need food I offer to take them to get them food... they never accept...

>Ding Ding Ding<

We have a winner! ;)

BTW: Sally is the only organization I've given to consistently over the years, both in terms of cash and goods. I can't hardly pass up a Red Kettle, and have stuffed in many Grant's and Jackson's.

They say that charity begins at home and that's where the vast majority of my charity has gone, but where the heck does it end?! As stated in the original post, some takers have no limit.
