Glock 42 : hang onto your shield

... The most comfortable 380 to shoot is the PK380, IMO. I am sure this will be similar.

I respectfully submit that even though it is a half inch shorter overall, weighs half an ounce more and has a .875" shorter barrel my Colt Mustang Plus II is more comfortable to shoot than the PK380.

A decade late and a caliber short

Glock is about 10 years too late to the party with an oversized gun that lacks in capacity (a .380 6+1 the size of the Shield 9mm 7+1)...

I own and often carry a Sig P238 when I don't have time to strap on the holster for my M&P 9c. I'm looking forward to the G42.

Greg Elifritz has done one of the most sound studies (drawn from police shooting reports) of handgun caliber effectiveness and the results state that there's not a huge statistical difference between .380 and 9mm effectiveness.

Why not just buy a Shield that is the same size? You're delusional if you think .380 is equal to 9mm in effectiveness or reliability (not to mention price and availability), but whatever rocks your boat.

A "failed" sale for glock is still a success for any other mfg. They will fly off the shelf. Not a fan of the 380 myself but I can see women flocking to this.

As for the R51.... looks like a genital wort you would find on a hi-point. Ugliest pistol I have seen in years.

I rather buy the Remington R51. Same size, 9mm, and 1 more round.

My first impression of the R51 was: "Flash Gordon called and he wants his ray gun back". But you're right, here's a side-by-side.

My only Glock is a Model 23 and was my service pistol that was retired w/me in '97. I'll admit being curious about the new Glock but if it's not pocket size, as are all of my J frames, no real interest here.

Honestly, i have no idea why Glock would even release this. The 380 market has been going strong for a while now and there are so many players. And if the price is $570????? what???? i already think glocks are WAY overpriced for what you get. But $570 for a 380?

and keep in mind this wasn't some engineering marvel on glocks part. the 380 already existed just couldn't be imported to the US until now.

I don't know, i just don't get it. I have 380's and am aware of their benefits and shortcomings, but i just can't see there even being a buzz about this gun. Its no big deal.

S&W 3953....slim, trim, single stack, no external safety or decocker, reasonably light weight, 9mm power. This is all you fellows need.

If you insist on a safety, get a S&W 3913.

I like the Shield, thin, light, accurate, and flawless functioning (so far). These make great gifts.

The 42 may actually be something my wife would like. She shoots a G21, but is now in a wheelchair and has limited hand and arm strength. She likes Glocks, and this would be an easy transition to replace her current little pistol - a Colt Government Lightweight 380.

Recoil sensitive people is a real world use for the G42 like the Ruger LC380 is. I just don't think Glock had that in mind when making it. I think they figured a new smaller Glock would sell and I have no doubt it will. I mean Apple can sell new products constantly to those who only want the newest thing because of the brand, why not Glock? Best case scenario would be a 9mm version with only a slightly thicker grip to accommodate the 9mm cartridge. Anything bigger than the current size would again sell, but still not compete except to those brand loyal Glockaholics.

IMHO, blow-back operated .380 a.c.p.'s tend to recoil as much or more than a compact 9mm P. My daughter-in-law shoots her Shield much better than the Beretta 84 I gave my son years ago, due to the recoil. The Shield is also thinner through the grip.

True, but the G42 isn't a blowback.

Depending on felt recoil, the 42 will probably end up in the hands of more women than men. Women are the fastest growing segment in gun sales so even though it's not a single stack 9 Glock figures they'll sell plenty of them to women who in turn will buy more Glocks in other calibers.

I'm pretty sure I paid more than that for my wifes SS Sig P232. OUCH!! She has good taste but damn that was an expensive day.
