glock or M&P??

Good Day From Boston
This is my first thread on this forum and I AM SURE this has already been spoke about. I am a die hard Glock Fan, Die hard. Recently shot (and liked) the M&P Fullsize 45acp. Who here has made the switch to the M&P? likes dis likes? I would consider buying the M&P 45acp with the four inch. My only hang up is mag capacity (10+1) but thats why we carry spares mag's. So if anyone has any input I would appreciate it.

For me, it was a no brainer. I am left handed, and all the glocks I looked at weren't ambi or didn't feel right in my hand. when i picked the MP up......I was sold. Then it was just to decide between the MP FS or the Pro......shot both, fell in love with the Pro trigger.

And I do like buying USA made firearms. :)

different guns

I have actually gone back and forth a couple of times with what I carry routinely. The Glocks are totally reliable, easy to carry, etc., etc. Plus the design is simple enough that I can fix almost anything needed fixing. The M&P are simply more comfortable to shoot and so I shoot them better than Glocks. I shoot both pretty well but the nod goes to the Smiths.

With aging eyes, however, the dealbreaker for me was the suitability of Crimson Trace laser grips. The lasers for the Glocks alter the grip and generally make it larger. The lasers for the M&P are totally homogenous with the various grips. You don't change anything about the grip when you put the Crimson Trace laser grip on it and I love that fact.

Most of the time I'll use the regular sights anyway. But the laser is for the middle of the night in the dark with no glasses on. I can still see the dot and aim the gun.

So for me, I'm M&P all the way.

I have owned several calibers and configurations of both (i.e., full size and compact) and both have their pluses and minuses.

I finally decided that I wanted to focus on 1911s and Glocks (with an occasional stray like the M544 I just found, or my LC9 for pocket carry.) I like the classic appeal and function of a 1911, and they can all share magazines. I like that I can go into any gun shop anywhere and find parts and accessories for my Glocks...plus, within a caliber, they can share magazines.

When I was buying M&Ps, I never could find any spare magazines to buy...and went round and round with S&W to get my rebate magazines (it took almost a year.) That soured me on the M&Ps. They do feel a bit better in my hand, but I like the utility of Glocks, and the ease of finding parts, accessories, and service virtually anywhere...I'm surprised 7-11 doesn't stock them!

I don't think you can go wrong with either one...it's really a matter of personal preference. There is one advantage that the M&P has that the Glock doesn't: if you do want a thumb safety, you can get an M&P with one; you can't on a Glock, unless you have one installed aftermarket.

I am a huge Glock fan as well. I have owned just about everyone they have made except the Gaps. The 21 is a fine auto, but it is big even in the SF form. The M&P gets my vote for the 45. It simply feels and fits my hands better. The XD is also an excellent 45 and I still own my 4 inch. Either of the three would be GTG, but it really depends on which fits you better. With a 1911 backgound, round capacity in a 45 is not a factor for me. TXPO

I've had a Glock 30 since 1997. last year I added an M&P .45 to the stable. In my hands, it never shot as well as the Glock. This is even after adding the "Apex" trigger kit.
M&P got traded off for a 681.
FWIW, I also have a 745, a 4566 and a 1911.

I have been an S&W man since the 70s but mostly in revolvers. Having said that I now own several Glocks and several M&Ps as well. My Glocks are great guns but you cannot beat the feel of the M&P in my book. Fits great in my hand and shoots great.

I use both as you can see in my signature I have a Glock 26 subcompact as well as the Model 59 and the M&P9FS! I like the grip and feel of my M&P but hate the three dot sights and am looking at replacing them with night sights!

I love the goal post sights on my Glock and shoot it very well, but as as am still breaking in my trigger on my M&P with only about 400 rounds through it I am getting better at each range visit!

I carry regularly the Glock 26 with 11 rounds and two magazines with 17 round cap. and when I still had my SUV which got totaled in an accident almost two weeks ago also carried the M&P9 FS with two extra mags with 18 then 17 mags with hollow points!

Hi:
On the Smith and Wesson Forum, did you expect positive feedback on Glocks and negative feedback on the Smith and Wesson??

Hi,
Nope, I just expected (which I got) ***/neg feedback pro/con on both weapons. I expected opinions (which I got) and expierences with shooter's who own/shoot both.
thanks

I have always loved Glock, and still do! They are the benchmark. I still carry one daily on duty, it's our only authorized duty weapon and have NO problem with it. However...one day I picked up one of these new M&P things and fell in love! I bought the 40c for off duty....it was/is the perfect compromise for me in size between the G23 and G27 the ergonomics are great as well! I have always been a good shot and qualify well with most any handgun. But this little 40c outshoots my full sized G22! I attribute that to how comfy the weapon is. Several thousand rounds with NO malfunctions as well...Before you buy rent the M&P it's one sweet shooting handgun!

But what in these 3 pages has done absolutely anything to sway you one way or another to buy an M&P? You said you were a die hard Glock fan, and nothing here will change that. I am back to my original statement, just buy one and live with it. If you like it great. If you don't, great.

Hi
Again, i was looking for some opinions from shooters who own or shoot both. Their expierences on both weapons, Different levels of shooters have different opinions. I have read on this forum where many shooters have "Hung up" their Glocks (Die Hard Glock fan's) and choose the M&P. And some shooters who went with the Glock AFTER trying the M&P. So those are the shooters opinio's I am looking for.
Thanks Though for your opinion.

Here's my honest opinion. For the most part I like Glock. I carry a model 22 as a duty weapon, but only because that's what I'm required to carry. I don't currently own a Glock but in the past I've had a 17, 19, 23 (which I wish I still had), 26, 27 and 36 (which I also wish I still had). All of my Glocks functioned very well and performed flawlessly. I did not care for the 26 or the 27 due to the "pinky pinch" problem I encountered with both of them. My personal favorites, as stated above, were the 23 and 36. I've got small hands and both of these pistols "worked" for me. The dissatisfactions, and I hesitate to use that word, I had with all of my Glocks was the feel of the grip and the small slide release. The grip was not ergonomically friendly for me. It was like holding a small slightly rounded wooden board. I'm left handed and found it cumbersome sometimes to manipulate the slide release which is very close to the frame. I did install an extended slide release on my 36 making it much easier to access. In Glocks favor is the fact they are overall a great pistol and I will most likely own another. You can get just about anything for them anywhere you look.

About a year or so ago I stumbled upon the M&P line while perusing the Glocks at my LGS. I'd read a little about them online and in some of the magazines. Unlike the Sigma line of pistols, I was impressed with the M&P. Construction appeared to be quality, the grip was natural and comfortable in my hand, the backstrap adjustability was a plus and the trigger pull was smooth. Everything simply felt better than the Glock. I found the trigger, slide realease and magazine release to be easier to manipulate than those of the Glock. I personally preferred the cantilever trigger of the M&P over the safe action trigger of the Glock. I purchased the 40C and enjoyed shooting it much better than my previously owned Glock 23. I've since added the 9C and 45C to my collection. All have functioned and performed flawlessly.

Both the Glock and M&P are reliable quality firearms and you can't go wrong with either of them. It simply boils down to personal preference.

Sir
Outstanding post, that was what i was looking for someone of knowledge that has shot both pistols. You stated your likes/dis likes of both pistols. Furthermore u stated exactly what you liked or dis liked. Yes, I own, shoot and EDC glocks. My duty weapon is a Sig 229 DAK (awful trigger) My EDC "was" a G27 Until i shot the M&P(i mean i didnt go ANYWHERE without the G27) The M&P simply feels better in my hand.
Thanks for a great post

One of my first guns was a Glock 17 and it never has caused me a bit of trouble. I have a Glock 27 and it's a great little gun--I just wish it were a little smaller--a true 'pocket pistol'. Both are about as good looking to me as 6 inch long cuts of a 2 X 4.

Neither of the Glocks feels half as naturally comfortable in my hands, or most probably as a result of that (and build/accuracy quality) shoots as well as my M&P 40c, which for what it's worth, looks a lot better than the Glocks as well.

I shoot GLOCKS in 9mm and .40, and M&P in .45 ACP, the compact .45. It has similar grip to the Gen4 GLOCKS so far as angle, but is much smaller than any .45 GLOCK.
I tend to shoot better with the Austrian gun, even though the M&Ps feel better in the hand.

I think the Glock that hit's the 'sweet spot' for all around usefullness is their model 23. Right size, ample power, reliable and accurate.

However my 'go to gun' is the M&P 40c, which so far has the same qualities, but is more comfortable in my hands and has a slightly better trigger feel to me. To me, it fits in the S&W M&P line were the Glock 23 fits in theirs.

Sure, smaller pistols fit right in my pocket, which is nice and with the right attention, a full size gun with a longer barrel pistol will be more accurate. Sure, you need the right tool for the right job, but the M&P 40c does everything I need it for, and pretty darn well at that. It's more user friendly and more versatile than any other gun I have.

I am not a huge fan of polymer guns, however,I have shot a friends fullsize M&P 45, and found it would probably be my first choice if I ever do buy a polymer weapon. It functioned flawlessly, shot to POA, had manageable recoil, adjustable backstraps, lifetime warranty. I would lean towards the M&P over the Glock, but really a buyer should go down to to their LGS and get a feel for both weapons prior to purchasing.

I don't like the reverse hook Glock's have on the front of their trigger guard. What is that for? Just to catch on a pocket or a holster? Seems poorly designed for holstering.

MPS1, wlcome to the forum! I guess I've done it the opposite of many, by owning the M&P before the Glock. I got a M&P 9c a few years ago, and like it OK. It is a very comfortable grip, and it points pretty well. I really do not like the trigger that came with it, gritty and mushy, not a good combo... It has not 'cleaned up' very well with use, either. I understand you can get the Apex trigger for it, but it should come with something better from the factory. The overall build quality is decent.

I resisted the Glock-thing for years, but finally broke down and got a Gen 4 19 early this year. I know there were reports of early guns with some feed issues, but mine has the new spring set, and I've had no problems with factory and re-load rounds. Unlike prior generation Glocks, the Gen 4 felt much better in my hand, and points well.

So, owning both, I was surprised that I now would give the edge to the Glock. The Gen 4 19 has a much better trigger out of the box than the 9c, and better than the mushy Gen 3s that I've tried in the past... They both feel good in the hand, and point well for me. They have both been 100% reliable, but I definitely shoot the Glock more accurately, and to point of aim better, compared to the M&P.

In the end you have to go with what works best for you. They are both good pistols. Some people will bash one, or the other, but I don't think you can't go wrong with either. To me, if you want a M&P you should just get it. Hey, it's only money, right...! You certainly don't need a new pistol that is similar to the one you already have, but you sure can get one.

Good luck with your decision, and let us know what you do...
