Glock owners...

That poor Glock sure did take a beating but kept on ticking I mean shooting. It's pretty interesting the things he put his Glock through to see if it worked but I sure wouldn't do any of my guns that way.

I don't know that a handgun is enough gun for shower duty. Probably better to have a long gun.... and a cookie. :)

Highlander:
I think you left out the Glock 36. It's sort of hard to classify: a single stack 45 (mag holds 6 rounds), and about intermediate between the 'intermediate' length and the 'pocket rockets'. I have one and it's probably the best concealed carry weapon I own.

My agency issues the G-19 for 90% of our people. It seems to fit everyone's hands well, sixteen rounds (with one up the pipe), and is comfortable to carry for 12-16 hours a day. If it were my choice I'd carry a larger caliber pistol, but have to admit the 9mm will probably do anything ever required of it.

I have 2 Glocks, a 17L (9mm) for the range and a 37 (45 GAP) for the nightstand...both have been problem free, easy to use and parts/accessories are readily available.
I'm impressed enough to seriously consider a model 38 (45 GAP in a 19 size package) as a carry gun...I'll save the 629 for short range hunting.
JMVHO & YMMV :D

Cyrano,
yep, I forgot that one. Nice gun, the G29/G30 just don't fit my hand, although the G20/G21 do. Not sure why.

I don't think I mentioned the long slide 17L in 9mm, or the 24 either. The last run of 24's they made, I ran into one at an out of the way gun shop, just killing time. They had the gun, I had no play money! Go figure.

I love my Smiths, but I carrys me some Glocks!

Blocks

Glock are great defensive pistols ....... but I prefer my weapons to have a little style also ...... :D

I carry a glock 30 everyday because I like the big grip and .45 cal. Everyones different and a lot of guys don't like .45 cal. for some reason. Why does everyone like 9mm? A deputy in the next county from where I use to live shot a guy five times with a 9mm and he was still running from him. I bet if he had been shot five times with a .45 he wouldn't have been running.

Our Department has had Glocks issued for the past 10 years and they have served us well. I personally own 3 Glocks, the G22, the G34, and the G19. The G19 has been the gun I have shot the most and at one time had an unlimited supply of free ammo and put nearly 7000 rounds through this gun without ever even taking the slide off. These guns are great and should be problem/maintenance free. However, just because you CAN get away without cleaning and lubing your glock for thousands of rounds doesn't mean it should be done on a gun you plan to use to possibly save you or your wife's life. I have had my G19 fully submerged in fresh water and salt water while fishing. I have had it in the rain, mud, snow, dust storms and its been left in my vehicle in extreme heat and its never missed a beat. Be careful with trying to emulate some of the torture testing though, for instance you CAN"T safely fire a Glock underwater unless you have the Marine spring cups, its a 9mm, you're using sub-sonic FMJ ammo, and the air bubbles are out of the barrel. And if you were to try this you don't want your head below the surface of the water because you WILL damage your hearing. One great thing about a Glock is that you can take the slide off and put the frame on the top of rack of your dishwasher to clean it. The bottom might get too hot and melt it, but the top rack works great, I have had 8 Glocks in my dishwasher at one time before and it worked out very nicely.

I am all for home protection, but how bout a dawg.

they are excellant alarms and excellant back up to your handgun or even better an 870.

We've got dogs. Two of them, and they make a great "warning system" but they're not big enough to do any harm. I just want my wife to have that sense of security anywhere in the house.
Everything that everyone has posted has been great advice that makes perfect sense but I still want something in arms reach for her just in case.
I don't think there's any such thing as being too prepared.
I've got plenty of shotguns, hunting rifles and large caliber autos and wheel guns, but the issue in my OP was my wife, here alone, in the shower with quick access to a gun that's not too much for her to handle.
Heck, if it were just for me I'd go for the 10mm or the .45.

I clean my Glock 23 in the dishwasher regularly after a range day of 500+ rounds with no ill effects whatsoever.

Did it to a H&K USP once and it ruined the finish. Note to remember, H&K would not warranty it either. Never did it with a S&W, not sure it'd hold up to a dishwasher.

I worked for the USNPS at National Recreation Areas for almost twenty years. It required a lot of Boat Patrol activity during the summer months. After a day on the Boats, it was mandatory to completely field strip and clean both of the Sigs I carried or you would have a film of rust the next day on the metal parts. The State Game Wardens we worked with carried Glocks and had far less problems with their guns than we did with the Sigs.

That said, I like Glocks and Sigs about equally.

I think everybody has sold me on the G19. Sounds major reliable and it's not too big for my wife to handle and plenty of round for close shots. Normally I consider 9mm a little small and under powered but for the purpose I'm lookin' for, it should be great.

Thanks for all the input guys. I got a lot of great responses to a question that I was afraid would be viewed as stupid.:)

Glocks will eventually suffer from corrosion on the internals if constantly exposed to water, particularly if you've got chlorinated water. Yes, I have taken Glocks in the shower, great way to clean crud out, but I would not leave one, or any gun, thus exposed indefinitely or make a regular habit of so exposing it without performing basic lubrication/maintenance on it afterwards. The gun ought be field stripped (if not detail stripped), dried and lubricated after every dunking.

While modern factory ammunition is pretty well waterproof, I also wouldn't feel like pressing my luck by having it constantly exposed to moisture such as in a shower. Ammunition will also corrode eventually.

I also would not have a Glock hanging about with a round in the chamber, so you'd want to keep it condition three.

For better results, stick your gun into one of these LOKSAK | Resealable Element Proof Transport & Storage Bags in a proper size. Not a Ziplock, but a proper waterproof storage bag.

Or you could just keep the gun in the bathroom and not in the shower itself.

I own two Glocks. I have a model G17 and a model G21. Ugly as sin firearms, blocky looking, not the best trigger, but they work any time I pull the trigger, just like I like my firearms. :)

Man, but I do so love the internet....

Where else would so many folks who wouldn't even know each other if they sat in the same booth at Denny's discuss what weapon to carry in the shower.....

Ya know there Wayne, if you took a bath instead you could make that a chocolate chip.... and a duckie.

I will definitely keep it clean and make sure the rounds are taken care of. I wasn't plannin' on keepin' it in the shower...just one of those, "just in case" guns. I take good care of my "kids" no matter how ugly they are.:D
