Glock vs. M&P-yup. I'm askin' it.

Both good guns. I purchased a G30 when they were introduced. Ditto for the M&P 45.
In my hands, with many different loads, the Glock always shot better. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. I put much of that to the M&P trigger. Installed an Apex kit that didn't make much difference. So, the M&P was relegated to the back of the safe and eventually traded for a nice Model 681.

Boy, this is a tough one. I was diametrically opposed to the Glock thing from day one, and refused to be drawn in. A firm believer in 3rd Gens, I was thrilled when S&W came out with the M&P. I loved the feel, and had to have one. Started with a .40, then a .45, and then a 9. They are fantastic guns, they shoot where you point, digest all ammo and go "boom" every time.

Then a few years ago a friend gave me his Glock 19. Wife didn't want guns in the house because kids were getting bigger. Hey, free gun - why not. Took it to the range, and the Glock mystique reeled me right in. That little 9 was like an extension of my hand, slightly smaller than the FS M&P's, but more balanced (and +2) than the M&Pc. Uh-oh, now what...well, that G19 was a Gen2 and I hated the grip, but the Gen3 with the fingergrooves was much more comfortable, and did you know they make a compact 10mm (G29) and how about .45GAP in a small frame like the G19? See where I am going here??

They are tools. Glock has it figured out. The guns work. Easy to work on, easy to clean, they function well, they go "boom" ALL the time. Smith has a great product with the M&P line, excellent weapons, and I think they are on a par with the Glock - and because they are Smith and Wesson products I will always hold them in a higher regard.

Answer? There is no answer. I carry them both with equal confidence. From a shooting standpoint I think I like the M&P .40, you can't beat the firepower and mine shoots like a dream. Good balance, easy to bring back on target, never a hiccup. And it is a Smith. When I need something a little more concealable, with equal abilities, I usually go with one of the Glocks. Like I said, there is no answer.

Boy did I go full circle...

P.S. I took my 5903 for a jaunt the other day, just for old time sakes! Still felt good.

Long-time Glock shooter here. I've owned MANY, and still had 3 until this morning.
At an IDPA match last weekend, a friend was kind enough to let me shoot his M&P 45. I have NEVER been able to shoot a completely unfamiliar gun that well. I couldn't miss from 10 yards. I came home and promptly ordered a new M&P Pro 5" in .40 and sold my G35s today! The M&P just feels better to me.

Shot a glock well, but the M&P 9 fits my hand better than any pistol.

It also points and shoots exceptionally well, and feeds every ammo I ran through it, including old nasty junk, hollow points, fmj without a hitch straight out of the box new.

Hard to beat that.

In the Glock line, I think I've shot about everything. The only M&Ps I've fired were the 40 and 45 full size. The first of the two S&Ws I shot was the 40 and was impressed that I was back up on target faster than with a Glock 40. I had read that the M&P triggers sucked, but didn't notice the trigger on that first pistol being excessively heavy, or rough, or not having a positive reset. I carry the 45 most of the time and like the way it conceals over a Glock 21, of which I've owned two. The trigger of that pistol is noticibly heavier than a 5.5 lb Glock, but only by a pound or so and was never gritty even when brand new. Since it doesn't have its trigger safety protruding from the trigger face, I do not blister my trigger finger when shooting 300 plus rounds at a time. I always thought the Glock pointed decent until I found the M&P, which points better. The M&P's grip fits my hand better. Glock makes the 19 and 23 which fit a unique nitch of a pistol that both conceals well with a decent size magazine capacity. I've got a 1st Generation 17 and a 2nd Gen 19 that have always been reliable. If I was going into harm's way in a harsh environment, I would feel most comfortable with a G17. It is simple, rugged, and reliable. I'd like to see someone with more money than I have conduct a torture test of the M&P the way they've been done to Glocks. Larry Vickers of Tac TV has done some side-by-sides of 3rd and 4th Generation Glock 17s, and of the Daniels Defense M4. Maybe he will see this and get intersted in such a test for the M&P.

I own both Glocks and M&P's like them both and shoot both about the same. I could live with either one if I had to but I also like wheel guns and 1911's. Between the two plastic guns you can't go wrong.

I have four S&Ws, three revovlers and a 2206 so I am a fan. I have never owned a Glock or M&P but I have heard good things about both. I bought a new 92fs last summer and I don't have a desire to even try a Glock or an M&P. Maybe with time that will change but my Beretta is as close to perfection for me as it has gotten so far.

I went to the range yesterday and rented a gen 4 G19. I keep thinking I need one but every time I shoot it with my M&P 9 I just like the M&P better. To me the size difference is minimal and you get two more rounds with the m&p so I really don't see a need for the G19 right now. Like I said earlier they are both good guns it is personal preference. I am not a fan of the full size Glocks because of the grip angle.

The Glock tends to bang the middle knuckle of my middle finger when I hold it and fire it ( the finger under my trigger finger). The S&W does not. Just that simple.

I'd like to see someone with more money than I have conduct a torture test of the M&P the way they've been done to Glocks .

ToddG did a torture test on the M&P.

I also don't know if you can make comparisons like Ford vs Chevy when Glock isn't even an American company, even though I understand why people bring it up. Well what is a good analogy, I can't think of one either.

I had a Glock 23C and planned on using it as my CCW, but it was way to snappy. I then eventually got a XDM9 and then got a M&P9L with Apex FSS, too big to CC though for my size. Overall the M&P just points easier than all of them though. I did shoot mfgr guns the last 3 years every April (~ 75+ guns to choose from) and shot the M&P9 4.25" (among many others). After I shot the M&P9 I started to research it for a year taking notes here and there in Word docs. Then 1 year and 2 months ago at my LGS's mfgr shooter show I shot the M&P9 FS and M&P9C side by side and that's when I had to sell the XDM9 to get a M&P9. This past April 2012 I shot the G17 Gen4 and the *ergos were much better* than the Gen3's I thought (yes a full size gun, but still could tell since just shot the M&P9). However it gave me a lot of extraction issues, they are very real, just search the internet. One mag I think I got 4 extraction issues. That would be very annoying though and there's no way you could CC a Gen4 9mm if it had that problem. However I know that Apex is working on a fix for it, I also know that *not all* of the late model Gen3's and Gen4's have this issue though. However I did the Pro V Sim 300 last summer and shot very well with the full size G22 (had to be Gen3 ?), I just would of done better if they had the M&P as an option. Before I started I kept repositioning my hand, but once you went fake “hot” in the sims you forget about it. Why I got a Glock Gen 3 10+ years ago was because of it’s “worry-free trail/woods/dirt and sweat proof tool seems like a good idea”. Read the torture tests and high round counts, same for the M&P. I will say that Glock fanboys are kind of like Mac ones though (good PC's, but they are NOT anywhere near as secure as people say they are), sometimes annoying.

However with the M&P9's in the last 2 years (maybe 3?) they do have a *very big problem with accuracy, some get 8" plus out to 25 yards from a rest (total BS) [[ Only 9mm's though, Compacts less chance of a big problem because of shorter barrel and dwell time issues ]]. I know the last half of 2011 it seems an even higher percentage of them have problems with accuracy than previous ones. The stock triggers are *horrible*, but I didn't even shoot my new M&P9L before I installed the Apex FSS & Trigger since it was very, very gritty. Of course those mfgr rep M&P's triggers were nice though, but they could of had 2k, 5k or even 8k+ on them for all I knew. I think S&W needs to seriously make an effort to fix the triggers on all of the M&P's, Pro's included, Pro's should have the FSS & Trigger kit in them (maybe wait for the Apex polymer trigger at least if S&W wants to save money). Granted the Pro will cost a fair amount more than now, but it would be worth it to most I'd assume once they shot the Apex kit, they also could adjust the trigger pull from 3.0 lbs. to 5.5 lbs.

Now the accuracy issue they need to fix right now. I was thinking of going the M&P40 route and just get a 9mm conversion barrel for it to fix the accuracy issue. That way could make 40 minor and more likely sub minor rounds sometimes and have 2 guns in one. I like the M&P9 that much, but hate the accuracy of it. Saying all of this, all the 9mm's are still good enough under 7 yards for self defense, but beyond that some of them will run a higher risk of hitting something beyond your target, granted I think it's small, but it's still there. Who's to say you won't have to shoot past 15 yards or so, and under stress, anyone's guess what will happen.

[/FONT]There is someone with a M&P9 getting 1" and under groups out to 25 yards from a rest (low wind). You have to look it up because of forum rules.

Because of the accuracy issues of the M&P9's I started a new Word Doc on the Gen4's last week. I am planning on getting into reloading to make minor and mostly sub minor loads so from the research on Glocks was told should get an aftermarket barrel if shooting lead, so then the costs were really high for the Glock. However others have said it's not that big of a deal if you Flitz or similar the barrels and maintain them. Also I'd would of liked that Glockworx Fulcrum trigger setup which is essentially the same cost or even more with some of the options you can choose compared to the Apex FSS & Trigger. This time I may just do the Apex Comp AEK Aluminum trigger and spring kit to save a little bit more money, but have to research it a little bit more. I did have the 3.5 lb. connector on my G23C and I like it. I know if I got the Glock and would keep it, I would at least get the Tech V4 Race Connector and the Competition Spring Kit. It's not going to compare to the Glockworx Fulcrum setup or the Apex FSS & Trigger bit it's way cheaper. For an M&P, even a Pro I'd still at least put in a couple Apex parts and really polish everything up.

Saying all of that, I have been searching Arms**** for a good deal on a M&P9 or a Glock G17,G19 Gen4. I came across a G19 Gen4 for $460 today which is what they should cost anyways (online prices, but they don't) and just missed it, even though I reload that page like 10+ times a day. I would sell the Glock Gen4 once I knew the 1" and under barrel was ready to go. I also have been trying to buy more American products, which is hard, but if the M&P really sucked then even American made I wouldn't buy it, but I do love it.

7 Glocks, 3 M&P's, both are good pistols.
IMO
Trigger Glock>M&P
Looks Glock<M&P
Reliability Glock=M&P
Ergo's Glock gen 1,2,3 <M&P
Glock gen 4=M&P
Aftermarket parts Glock> M&P

My only real complaint with the M&P is I wish they had a G19/23 sized gun. For me this is my perfect EDC sized gun (per my hand size). Otherwise like mentioned before it is basicly Ford vs Chevy.

IMHO both are quality, proven reliable firearms. I have shot both regularly.

For me it all comes down to ergonomics. The M&P just "fits" my hand better and the grip angle of the M&P is more comfortable. Hense I shoot better with the M&P.

For me it all comes down to personal preferance and comfort, especially when competing on dynamic courses like IDPA and USPSA.

What tipped the scaled in favor of the M&P is the feel and the traditionally rifled barrel will shoot cast lead bullets. Said practice to be dangerous in a Glock per internet wisdom.

It's a very personal decision, which ever one fits and shoots better for you.

Mags are cheaper for the Glock. At the moment mags for the M&P 9 appear to be out of stock.

I had a Glock 19 (Gen3) and ended up selling it last year after getting an M&P. Wish I held on to it. As much as I agree that the M&P feels better in my hand, I shot my Glock better than the Smith. I think it's because of the trigger. Anyhow, after a year shooting the M&P, I went and got a new Gen4 Glock 19 just the other day and to me, it feels better than the Gen3, but the ergos on the Smith are still better. With that said, I still prefer the Glock's trigger. Hope to get out this weekend and give it a whirl. Regardless, I think both are great guns.

Well since I last posted back in Feburary things have changed. After some time thinking I needed a Glock 19 I rented one at the range. It was a gen 4 and everything went well with it but I just shot my M&P better and more accurately. I have never had any issues with my M&P 9's accuracy. So after the range vist I traded my Glock 30sf on a Ruger SR1911 and am now Glockless. The M&P works best for me.

I own Glocks and carry an M&P .40 at work. Like the ergonomics of the M&P but i believe the Glock will feed loads that the M&P will not.

Thinking very seriously about buying a 9mm M&P pro if they ever become available again.

The M&P fits my hands better, and the ever so slightly higher bore axis seems perfect for me combined with the beavertail. I have medium sized but meaty hands and Glocks give me horrible slide bite after 100 rounds or so. Take an all day or multiple day training class, my hand would almost require stitches. I carried a Glock daily for years and my reason to switch was not reliablility, just how the two different guns fit me.

I had a full size M&P45. Traded it to my brother-in-law for his Glock 23 as I needed something more compact. I have a trade on tonight - going back to M&P - M&P40c.

I don't like these things about the G23 (I say that because I actually do like the G27 - not as well as the M&P but I could live with that more):

1. Don't like the trigger.
2. Don't like the grip.
3. Don't like the takedown as well (although it isn't bad)
4. Don't like the look.

So, I'm psyched that, in only 10 hours, I should be back in the M&P saddle again.

I own several Glocks. Bought my first in 1994. Love them ALL.

I bought a S&W Shield 9mm the first week of May because Glock does not offer a single stack compact. Yet. ;)

My Shield is now my EDC. Great little pistola.
