Going Shooting, what to take?

I decided last night I was going to head out this AM to go shooting, not much of a plan, just head out to some nearby BLM land and relax.

Then the dilemma started, what to take.

Have you ever decided to go shooting but didn't know what gun/guns to take? I am not doing any sighting in, just going out to have fun.

I sat here for a while trying to figure out what hasn't been shot for a while and it was way too many. So that really didn't help much.

It was kind of strange though, for the first time ever my plan to go shooting did not involve a specific gun for a specific purpose. It was a strange feeling.

But I did decide finally, it is going to be a M1A, AR180B, and a Marlin bolt 17HMR. I am still not sure if I will take a pistol or not. I think the 17HMR will cover the fun requirement quite well.

Well, maybe a Model 57, those are always fun.

I have that problem every time I go. I have collected classic guns for 50 years. Many of them some would call sacreligious to shoot! Except for about 3 commemeratives the rest are open to being at least lightly shot to me. Yet I am somewhat reluctant to take out safe queens when in every case I have other good guns that will do the same job! I dont shoot a fraction of what I did many years ago. Have already worked with and have sighted in long ago the majority of my guns. Therefore I find myself takeing guns that I am most apt to need for the situation that I need. I still have a few that I need to work out when I get to them. My situation of late is that I do a lot of boondocking on the quad on dusty trails and dont like takeing the best fine classics I own, so I just have my working guns narrowed down to a few.

I typically take a bunch of guns and then only shoot some of them.

Luckily I shoot on my own land so I don't have this issue. Generally I go up to my range with a dozen guns or so in the truck... not that I use that many.

The last time I went out to a range I brought three rifles and five handguns. Doesn't hurt to pack extra.

I usually have guns that I need to shoot, either for an article, or because I haven't shot them for a while. On Independence Day I took out "Long Tall Sally" a M657 with an eight and three-eighths inch barrel because it hadn't been to the range for a few months.
I also took a 10/22 that I'd recently scoped and needed to sight in. I brought my M15, and some other stuff, just because I wanted to fire it.

I'll also ask my 17 year-old son, who usually goes with me, if there's something he really wants to shoot. When my daughter comes along I always bring a Browning Hi-Power. She really likes that gun!
