A major road around the lake I live on is going to have a bridge replaced. The powers that be are going to install a portable traffic light system to make this a alternating share the road trip. (There working on it now)

Going to make this area a serious Charlie Foxtrot till sometime in fall. About 3/8ths of a mile there sits a large marina with a boat launch, repair facilities and dockage slips that holds at least 50 boats. A few miles past that there is a large free public launch and picnic area. O yeah the local fire company and rescue squad are quite close to the roadblock. I can see lines of vechicles sitting in the road both sides waiting for their chance to proceed!-

Yes there are ways around if you know the area, a lot longer drive and the chance to pee off the people that now are living quietly on that narrow route. I foresee lots of problems as drivers are not going to be happy and will be driving real fast and recklessly to make up for lost time.

Somebody rear ended a parked semi climbing out of Denver yesterday sparking a fire that closed both sides of I-70 and hiway 40 all day. This morning there’s a pic of a semi stuck in a hairpin curve climbing out of Golden on Lariat Loop trying to bypass the mess. Sometimes it’s best just to stay home [emoji15][emoji28]

Colorado DOT recently found cracks in the supporting structure of a bridge on Rt. 50 between Montrose and Gunnison. Here is the suggested detour.

This closure will create a significant detour for commuters between Montrose and Gunnison. The recommended detour route for through traffic is via Interstate 70 to the north or US 160 to the south. CDOT understands the inconvenience that this creates and is rapidly evaluating options to improve options for residents, businesses, and travelers on the western slope. The northern route is 354 miles and requires approximately six hours of travel time. The southern route is 331 miles and requires nearly 7 hours of travel time. CDOT and local partners are exploring whether it is feasible at this point in the season to clear local seasonal routes that may be able to significantly reduce the detour time for local travelers.

Still no idea of how long this will be in place as no repair work has started yet.

Just hope they finish their work ON TIME! :D

For sure.:D

My large in area town has about a 1,000 year around residents. With people coming up to their camps that could swell to 5,000+ in just my town. Add to that a few other towns, the day tripper pulling his boat or camping trailer and just the normal sightseer.

Going to be a busy road for sure!

Our main road is going to be closed in sections all summer. They are replacing small culverts with large ones so the fish can make it upstream to spawn......

My area had the same issue several years ago. Bridge crossing the lake on major area road. Portable traffic lights, one way bridge for two years.
After a few weeks it became a non issue. People are adaptable.

I could think of a couple different words than Adaptable!-:D

This is northern NY we basicaly only get about 12 real good weather weeks. Beginning of June till Labor day. So if they had to pick the worst possible time to do it they picked right!

FWIW ten years ago we replaced the large Batchellerville Bridge in this general area that was about 3 years of a portable light systen controlling the almost mile long bridge.

I base my statements on what I saw back then and a lot of what people did was ridiculous and very illegal. You waited 7 minutes got a green light started across (that was a cross time of 5 minutes and a total clear time of two more minuets so there would be no problem)

Course if it was busy you might not make it across for a few cycles! Many times you would meet some ticked off yahoo coming at high speed running the light instead of waiting. Believe me that was way too common. Good thing there were a few spots that you could pull over a bit or I would have been a statistic. That goes for a lot of people up here! This was a big county and the odds of running into a LEO were slight and many people knew that!

Many of the DOTs and State Police organizations of the Western states exhibit a warped sense of humor when it comes to detours. Recently we had a fatal on US 95 between Amargosa Valley and Beatty. Advice from Nevada State Patrol (NSP) was that US 95 south was shut at Beatty, while US 95 N was closed at the junction of a road called Valley View. They further advised that drivers should use "alternative routes". Uh-huh.

Right now, some of you are looking at Google Earth saying, "Oh yeah, you just need to get off the 95 onto one of those parallel roads to work around the wreck." Nope, because probably 90% of what appears to be a paved road in NV on a map or satellite picture is either gnarly washboard dirt or a dry river bed with a silty bottom. Neither are suitable for heavy traffic.

So what are the alternate routes? In Beatty you could, in theory, drive into Death Valley over Daylight Pass, then South through Furnace Creek on CA 190, recovering back to US 95 on NV 373. Again, don't try this in an 18-wheeler, because the road over Daylight Pass is an angry snake. Oh, and then there's the issue of the Park Service require you to pay to use their roads.

The only real alternative for southbound traffic is to backtrack North from Beatty for 92 miles to Tonopah, I advise against using the 266 through Lida in your semi. Then either head West into CA to pick up the 395, or to go East on NV 6 to the ET Highway then South on US93 to Vegas. The latter only adds about 234 miles to your journey.:p Please remember to gas up in Tonopah, as there are no gas stations for 154 miles until you get to Ash Springs. Coming North, you really need to start your detour in Vegas, reversing the long route to Tonopah.

Better plans are to lay up in a bar in Beatty or Amargosa Valley until the road is cleared.

You know, man made stuff does not last forever and bridges and roads and such have to have maintenance and sometimes be replaced. There is never a good time, just be glad "the powers that be" are taking the initiative to do what needs doing before it caved in and killed someone.

We Americans so hate to be inconvenienced.

Regarding the longevity of a road, used to said in Chicago that the expressways' main subcontractor for concrete was Quaker Oats.

A different take here on road construction, this area is a chain of recreational lakes, resorts, and million dollar lakefront homes. US highway runs north/south the length of the area. Currently in the middle of a 3 year project removing all the old concrete and laying new for an eight mile segment of the highway which is mostly 3 lane. Work can only be done prior to Memorial Day weekend and after Labor day. And access must be maintained for all the small & large businesses in that area. So work is done in about 2 mile segments. one or two lanes at a time. There was only one time that required the single lane with traffic signal and that was when doing the bridge area between 2 lakes. This fall should be the end with some finish up next spring. It's been interesting to say the least!

Sounds like you have higher IQ people doing the planning!-
